  Holy shit.

  This is... maybe the best mainstream comedy movie I have seen in a very long time. Every single aspect of it was done well! Direction, script, even the way it’s shot. Every actor is hilarious. The plot is fantastic. I am honestly floored by this movie. Please go watch Game Night.

  my girlfriend asked which one of southwest’s in-flight film selections would best distract her from her fear of flying and i evangelized about how good Game Night was. then i watched it over her shoulder on her phone as she winced every few minutes from minor plane turbulence. she liked it and said it was much better than the poster would suggest. then she made fun of me and said “are you gonna log that on letterboxd after watching 20 minutes over my shoulder” so i said yep and am now writing this as she watches me. you can do anything you want on this app

  Things missing from Game Night:
  Tired, overdone high-on-drugs sequence; someone’s bare ass we didn’t ask to see; James Franco; a barrage of penis, boobs and vagina jokes; a diarrhea scene (classic comedy)

  Things present in Game Night:
  Smart, surprisingly creative cinematography; a bumping, synth-heavy score; Jesse Plemons; hilarious scenes that mirror popular games; tons of film references; incredible chemistry with the entire cast

  Totally holds up for me!!!!

  Really really think this should be a high benchmark for directing as far as modern studio comedies go. Everyone is so good here, but this shit really shines when Jesse Plemons is on screen and the way they direct his scenes shows they know it. The slow pushing in on him, the little beats that let his delivery breathe. I also love how good they are at using the frame to sell a gag, like when Billy Magnussen slides the money across the table, or when they have him deliver an ad-lib off screen: something people don't do enough outside of the Coens! Underutilized joke delivery. Love it. Love them. Love this!!!! Never gonna forget how hard I scream-laughed at the glass tables joke in the theater. :)

  Two little details I noticed and loved:

  1) the shot when they run out of the bar has the camera locked to the door, and when it opened the camera panned to show the guys running from the bar. insanely good direction

  2) when they're making out in the very beginning on the subway, the ticker behind them says "DON'T TRUST GARY." :)
