I am seriously pissed off that it took me this long to discover this trilogy. When I think of all the wasted years I could have been watching this, it makes my blood boil. Why?! Why did nobody tell me sooner, that Gamera kicks every bit as much ass as Godzilla, and that Shusuke Kaneko is a gift from the kaiju gods? I'm also pissed that Kaneko didn't direct more of these. “I Will Not Forgive Gamera”
I’ve written and deleted multiple openings to this review because I can’t think of a proper way to begin my thoughts on this incredible masterpiece. All I can think off is… this film fucks so hard.
There’s ending a trilogy on a high note, then there’s ending it on Revenge of Iris. An absolute sucker punch of a film that raises the stakes in every conceivable way. It’s darker, more mature, brings back characters from previous films with added development, has the coolest Kaiju ever to face Gamera, and comes full circle with the first film heavily impacting this one.

The End of Evangelion of Tokusatsu. My favorite thing about this trilogy is how entirely different each one feels from another. Gamera was such an innocent creature and a force of good in the previous two movies so the absolute BALLS on the filmmakers to change his design, make him more demonic looking and straight up turn him into an almost anti-hero figure…
The best and final movie in the trilogy really out here addressing our selfish need to be saved instead of wanting to save others. Accepting responsibility for what we can and cannot control. Finding resolve when confronted with the manifestation of our insecurities. Oh, and turtle power saves the day. Giant monsters be cool. Gamera is a true hero.
alright, this is definitely my favorite gamera film. this may even have the best effects i've seen in any of the older kaiju films and iris is probably my favorite villain kaiju. i absolutely love the concept of there having been multiple gameras. the only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars is the ending. it may be a bit harsh, but i'm taking away a whole star due to that. other than that, this is a perfect kaiju film.
The Heisei Gamera trilogy are some of the best kaiju movies ever and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris is the best of the three! The story is compelling, the human characters, particularly Ayana Hirasaka, are great, the cinematography is beautiful, and the kaiju action is awesome! I also love the characterization of the kaiju themselves. Gamera has kind of gone insane from the fights with Gyaos and Legion, becoming increasingly violent. That scene where the Gyaos crash-lands and his eyeball is hanging out really sticks out to me as one of the most brutal things I have ever seen in a kaiju movie. Compelling characters and a well told narrative make this a great Gamera movie - and a great movie full stop. We conclude an effective reboot trilogy by exploring the collateral damage of Gamera, and monster attacks in general.
This allows the film to touch on some awesome themes and questions about the nature of deterrent policies, what revenge does to a person and proportionality in general. Alas, the film decides to add more ideas - flirting briefly, and unsatisfyingly with further ideas about environmental guilt - than it ever explores. It puts plot progression over themes and doesn’t feel as cohesive as it could.

I like how the '90s Gamera movies, especially this last installment, tread serious territory without succumbing to brooding grim dark silliness. In Revenge of Iris, the lead teen witnesses Gamera cause about ten 9/11s while fighting a giant flying reptoid monster. Her family dies, and the rest of the movie focuses on her struggling with survivor's rage and guilt as she fosters a li'l kaiju to Gamera crushing tower height. HEAVY.
