Lorelei Lee is a beautiful showgirl engaged to be married to the wealthy Gus Esmond, much to the disapproval of Gus' rich father, Esmond Sr., who thinks that Lorelei is just after his money. When Lorelei goes on a cruise accompanied only by her best friend, Dorothy Shaw, Esmond Sr. hires Ernie Malone, a private detective, to follow her and report any questionable behavior that would disqualify her from the marriage.

What a weird movie.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. It’s wonderful, a delirious Technicolor extravaganza with delicious one-liners and an iconic Marilyn Monroe performance. But it is decidedly weird.
Part of that weirdness can’t be excused or rationalized. The pacing is occasionally choppy and the continuity is sometimes off. Howard Hawks, master of genres far and wide (gangster film, screwball comedy, film noir, Western), is not a perfect fit for the movie musical, which requires just a bit more nonsense than interests the no-nonsense Hawks. To me this is the zenith of femininity in the 50s, and it's so wonderful to see women and what they want celebrated instead of derided. This film adores Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe, only shooting them in the most fabulous outfits possible, decked out in jewels and wondrous colours. Both leads carry with them a real sense of power. They adore their bodies and how they fashion themselves. They know they can control a room with just a look or a glance, and their beauty overpowers every man in sight. This is most apparent in the "Ain't There Anyone Here for Love?" sequence where an entire Olympic gymnasium full of men are ogled and dance for her pleasure. This…
