Having not seen/read the original source material, I was rather entertained by this remake. I loved the neon-drenched cyberpunk atmosphere and equally effective ambient-electronic soundtrack. I appreciate the effort that has gone into the VFX of this film, it creates largely fresh look-even though it is heavily influenced by the classic cyberpunk movies/video-games.
What I didn't like, though, was that the movie just touches upon the subject of ambiguity of memories and realities-and other Philip Dick-esque/Issac Asimov-esque ideas, and subsides it for rather generic action set-pieces.
And, also, Scarlett Johansson is not a competent enough actress to bring out the subtleties of emotions of her character.
Now I wonder if I will enjoy the original anime/manga just this much, or more?
