Whoever decided to make the Ghoulies talk deserves to be chopped up and flushed down the toilet. Too dumb for adults, too horny for children.
I still can’t believe that this is the first time I’ve watched this series because it’s like these movies were made for me and all my bullshit. And this time the ghoulies talk and it’s entirely awful one liners!
It came out in 1991, but it all feels very late 80’s to me and that’s probably because this is basically an 80’s college comedy with ghoulie action and I’m completely ok with that. The ghoulies are set loose during a prank week, except all the frat bros refer to them as “yanks” so there’s all kinds of talk about “yanking” and “yanking each other” and “pulling yanks” and “yankers” and I don’t have any idea how someone could possibly not…
So I watched Ghoulies 3 again. Love when they go to college. So much fun. Brings the hilarious hijinks and shennanigans like few other films. I want to go to college with the Ghoulies. I want to be their friend. I will climb through their magic toilet to chill with em. Whatever it takes.
Ghoulies 3 polarizes it's viewers. On one hand we have a mystical campy adventure filled with great practical FX, glowy green lights and fog machines, quirky antics a plenty and our magical puppet friends!
On the other hand Ghoulies 3 has some of the most annoying and lameass characters, cringy dialogue, awkward humor and a James Spader wannabe. You make the call. Will your spirits fall? Is your courage tall? Will your brain hit a wall? A slow logic crawl....of joy!!
never thought i would be live laugh loving high on the hog of the ghoulies lifestyle and yet here i am, doing exactly that! i guess as a big beautiful brain genius of rather discerning tastes i "get" the ghoulies on a fundamental level whereas people who are dumber than me may not. sad! as a juicy brained intellectual who does not wish to be merely entertained by my entertainment, ghoulies are truly a massive brainal stimulant! an all natural high, if you will. my grey folds are being caressed most sensually by these horny little ghoulies! and yes, this series is so good precisely because the ghoulies get progressively hornier! "let the ghoulies fuck" is a battle cry if ive ever heard one, and i WILL go to war to ensure ghoulies have the fundamental human right to bone hot babes! is that not my right as a feminist?
Campus sex comedy trash meets Ghoulie mayhem and I am here for it.
Ghoulies III feels like a holdover from the late 80’s—over the top, horrible archetypes, a gargoyle toilet, zany campus hi-jinx etc. it’s all there. I love and miss Kevin McCarthy and can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever seen him mail in a role, no matter what the circumstances (Ghoulies Go to College) were.
John Carl Buechler is an interesting fellow. He worked as a special effects artist on many films, including the first two Ghoulies films, for which he was credited as the designer of the titular demonic troublemakers. You may have also seen his effects work in such films as Re-Animator, Trancers, Troll, TerrorVision, From Beyond, Friday the 13th Part VII, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, and Halloween 4, to name a few. He also directed Troll, Friday the 13th Part VII and Ghoulies Go to College, among other things.
So, we have a Ghoulies film directed by the effects artist who worked on the first two films and designed the ghoulies, and who had previously directed one of the better…
Is it me or does it feel like these Ghoulie movies are truly stepping up their game? Then again, I haven't gotten to part 4 yet. And judging by the movie's IMDB score of a 2.8/10, and it's letterboxd score which is a 1.9, it looks like it decreased in quality after getting 2 solid sequels, and one of those solid sequels happens to be this movie right here! This is another one of those sequels that happen to be better than the original, so this is definitely going on my "Sequels That I Think Are Better Than The Original" list here on letterboxd: letterboxd.com/systembroke/list/sequels-that-i-think-are-better-than-the/
Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College, directed by John Carl Buechler, who also directed Friday…
Finally a Ghoulies movie that lives up to those toilet-themed posters! We're in full Three Stooges-mode at this point with awful slapstick comedy, Ghoulies yukkin' it up non-stop, and the "plot" is basically 2 frats trying to out-prank each other except they don't call em pranks they call em YANKS. "I haven't pulled a yank in days." Dude what the fuck?
Wacky college teen comedies filled with low-brow humor and gratuitous nudity were all the rage following Animal House (1978), and they survive in some form to this day. To say the films from the 1980s and early 1990s are “problematic” by today’s standards is an understatement, however, many are still quite entertaining if you try to forget how utterly wrong some elements and scenes in them are (I’m looking at you Revenge of the Nerds (1984)). It’s understandable that studios wanted to make money on something that was a sure way to make a buck, it’s less understandable that the film chosen to become a wacky college teen comedy was Ghoulies III.
There are clues to what happened. Well, we…
Everyone's favourite Ghoulies have found their way into college and the hijinks are at an all time high! The wacky antics are dialed up to the max as the Ghoulies fit right in with all the silly pranks and mischief of college life. By far my favourite Ghoulies film.
This film mixes a lot of teen comedy elements with horror and I can see how it wouldnt work for everyone. For me it works just fine though. I was laughing from the first few minutes when that guy was riding the mop bucket across the campus. But I also still like Ernest movies so it's to be expected.
This film was trying so hard to be a typical teen college…
This is some glorious trash right here! Take an early 90's mediocre raunchy college comedy and sprinkle Ghoulies all over it and BAM here's your breakfast, wise guy!
This really is a bad college comedy, following two rival fraternities trying to claim the title as top pranksters and win the coveted "prank crown".
Obviously this makes them irresistible to women so there's plenty of nudity and sleaze and weird sex scenes.
Somehow the Ghoulies enter into this like two films combined into one and fortunately the Ghoulies talk so the one-liners will you keep on cringe mode the entire run time.
The film however hits a serious spot after an hour or so and it felt like the magic wore off. The last half hour is a bit tiring after this but fortunately the ending tries to insert some more zaniness again with a final boss that's friggin' Ghoulies-tastic!
Highly recommended!
