  briefly felt like the story deserved a little more substance, but i think it plays perfectly into how liminal that time feels as a young adult. it is at times dreamy and at other times unbearable. that uncertainty is balanced with such clarity towards the three girls, even if they don’t see it yet. want to revisit it, but mostly want to revisit them. in a year, or two, or five, when there’s a whole new set feelings at their feet.

  Sundance 2022 — Film #10

  My first Finnish film and my last Sundance film! And what a phenomenal film to end an equally phenomenal experience on—Girl Picture is probably one of, if not the most rewatchable movie ever (right up there with Booksmart). And with Girl Picture, we have one more coming-of-age film featuring a character in a same-sex relationship without being about their reckoning with their sexuality. 

  Girl Picture (or Tytöt Tytöt Tytöt—Girls Girls Girls) follows high-schoolers Emma, Mimi, and Rönkkö on three consecutive Fridays.   Girl Picture. 2022. Directed by Alli Haapasalo.

  In seventy two hours a great deal can happen to three teenage girls in Finland. Emma (Linnea Leno), Mimmi (Aamu Milonoff), and Ronkko (Eleonoora Kauhanen) are the teenagers who are simultaneously slipping into adulthood and sliding into teenage lives. This transitional phase has equal parts fun and equal parts pain. It is the nature of the coming of age narrative and Alli Haapasalo captured the verisimilitude of teenage life in Girl Picture (2022) entry into the Sundance Film Festival.

  every scene in this made me:
  - open up Shazam to find the name of the song playing because this soundtrack is capital A amazing
  - smile in its central conceit of turning a coming-of-age tale into a coming-of-self one, essentially unlocking yourself, sexually and spiritually, to find a path that’s truly your own instead of what’s expected or *right*

  There's nothing quite like the raw passion that we feel in our youth. Everything somehow feels so much more urgent and heightened.

  First "this will last forever, over the moon in-love!" love. First sexual encounters. First throes of heartbreak. First headstrong attempts at defining who you are. Many of these experiences are molded with rash certainty despite being hewn by naiveté.

  This film superbly decenters the male gaze in its approach to depicting the hella messy and complicated and unfiltered truths of multi-dimensional girls on the cusp of womanhood as they attempt to make sense of the world while also boldly exploring what they want and what they want from each other.

  Girls, girls, girls.

  This is a really solid teen coming of age story for people that like films about desire and friendship. The casting and performances are very solid and the direction is quite nice. The meandering pace and the choice of score and soundtrack create a dream-like vibe that I quite enjoyed.

  A refreshing entry into the coming-of-age genre that took me into a rollercoaster of emotions. The director, Alli Haapasalo's beautiful direction in balancing between pure wholesomeness, the exploration of sexuality as well as heart-wrenching relationship struggles, yet without falling into any of the obnoxious clichés of its genre is worth plenty of praises. To add on, note-worthy acting performances by the 3 lead actresses who all portrayed their character brilliantly. The cherry on top is the soundtrack which is God-tier probably one of the best soundtracks I've ever listened to, up there with Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Baby Driver (2017), and Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010).

  Films like this just, like... do something to my heart. It's probably a little too eager to please, shying away from the more messy material too quickly, but I just adored hanging out with these characters. Intelligent performances, making those small-scale acts of kindness and betrayal feel like everything — which they are, to these girls at least. Smart decision to set the film across Fridays, as if it's the only day that matters (it is). Loved the non-resolution of Rönkkö’s arc; rare to see a film discuss asexuality, rarer still for a film to treat the character with such warmth and casualness.
