How completely unexpected.
A film about a skateboarding punk from 1989 should not have this much to say about race. It's not a sterling, complex view of race, certainly, but it exceeds all expectations by having even a little nuance. Racism is called out when it's overt! In-character and by the film's perceptions! The villains are anti-communist?! A funeral for a Vietnamese kid raised by white people acknowledges cultural differences for his funeral. Sure, there's still problems here--white cops abusing Vietnamese suspects' rights, for one thing, and a brief subplot that doesn't explicitly use the phrase "reverse racism" but is sympathetic to that ridiculous canard--but it's far more than I expected from what I thought would be…
Teen skateboarder/political thriller crossover is very much a product of its time—strip malls, Pizza Hut, gnarly boards, Christian Slater, skate ramps, pool skating, palm tree silhouettes with an orange sun sparkling behind it, murder, communism, intrigue, and a Vietnamese weapons smuggling ring with a video store as a front.

This must have passed me by because I had no idea this was a film that actually existed which is surprising seeing it stars Christian Slater and I watched as many of his movies as I could after seeing True Romance as a teenager. Using a plane to scope out pool spots?? man I wish I had those resources lol
I was happy to see some good stunt work and a young Tony Hawk so I’m satisfied. Plus if you have Rodney Mullen and Mike McGill as your stunt doubles, and Stacy Peralta as second-unit director for all the skate scenes, your in good hands. To be expected tho, there’s really not that much skating compared to the bulk of the story. The premise is fairly simple/predictable with a decent mystery but I was actually shocked at how much I enjoyed this. It’s got so much heart and Christian Slater is awesome. That gravestone scene is wow. The one on one with his dad, wow. That downhill chase sequence, WOW. Yeah this was sick!! 7.5/10🛹
