Humanity finally rids themselves of Godzilla, imprisoning him in an icy tomb in the South Pole. All is peaceful until various monsters emerge to lay waste to Earth's cities. This movie is too crazy not to love. I mean, this is truly some glorious madness. It's essentially a batshit crazy, live-action anime that combines a Japanese X-men knockoff with a remake of Destroy All Monsters, and even throws in a dash of The Matrix. It's also the main reason to watch all of the Godzilla-related Toho films in addition to the ones that feature Godzilla. This film references and/or includes elements from dozens of films, including stuff like Gorath and Atragon. Final Wars marked 50 years of Godzilla. Half a decade of the King of the Monsters dominating pop culture. It’s no surprise they decided to go all out before he would once again go dormant.
This is simply a celebration of Godzilla and Toho. A loving sendoff that honors what came before. It’s apparent from it’s opening credits where we see a timeline showcasing Godzilla’s history and many variations.

Godzilla: Final Wars is a pastiche in the same sense that my bowel movements are a pastiche of everything I've eaten earlier in the day.
seeing this amazing film in 2005 in a crowded chicago theater jam-packed full of hyped godzilla fans was the greatest cinematic experience of my entire life; when we first saw the godzilla vs. american zilla fight, the sheer volume of that audience's reaction to that scene could have shattered glass.
I was curious to know if watching GODZILLA: FINAL WARS after going through the Godzilla franchise would lessen or heighten the experience.
Good news! It only got better.
I became acutely aware of how loving a tribute it is. The structure, the characters and the storytelling are all share the same DNA with everything that's come before - from the presence of the reporter and scientist, the non-actor American lead, the alien invasion plot, and the sheer joy of spectacle is pure Showa-era fun. By the time Toho had come around to it's fiftieth anniversary celebration of Godzilla, they didn't have any stories left to tell about him. Not that Godzilla films in the past weren't already somewhat batshit crazy in their own right, but this one right here is something entirely different. This is the kind of batshit crazy that only Hollywood films could've influenced.

An odd one to revisit again so soon after seeing the superior and far more deeply nuanced Shin Godzilla, but there's far too much Saturday morning cartoon mayhem going on here to completely dismiss it. Its kaiju action often reminds me of Giant Monsters All-Out Attack and its soaring blend of costumes, miniature sets, CGI, blown-out angles, debris exploding everywhere... but it's all so frenetic and ridiculous, cutting from one scene to another involving all kinds of monsters, post-Matrix wuxia mutants fighting aliens, and a katana-wielding Mike Haggar. this was my favorite movie as a kid. watched it so many times. its still awesome. its stupid as fuck but its just so cool. recaptures some of that bouncy doofy showa spirit by having king caesar and godzilla and rodan play soccer with sonic-balled-up anguirus. gotta love it
