All three of Masaaki Tezuka's Godzilla sequels are basically carbon copies of each other, varying only in competency and what sources they're stealing from. This might very well be the most insipid movie in the series, and skull-searingly dull to boot.
Another Self Defense Force fantasy for an increasingly conservative-minded (and xenophobic) Japan, which also jerks off to its national obsession over hi-tech gadgets and military weapons. Mothra looks amazing but seems added just to fill up time and for dwindling audience appeal.
Tellingly, Hiroshi Koizumi reprises his character from the original Mothra film, who's now an old fuddy-duddy the government decides to ignore. Back in the Showa era, the heroes were usually scientists and reporters. Now, they're soldiers and bureaucrats.
