2000 ‘ゴジラ×メガギラス G消滅作戦’ Directed by Masaaki Tezuka
In an alternate timeline the original Godzilla is never defeated and repeatedly reemerges to feed on Japan's energy sources. A new inter-dimensional weapon called the Dimension Tide is created with the intent of eliminating Godzilla. However, the new weapon might also serve as a gateway to something far more sinister.

Godzilla is stabbed in the dick twice by a giant dragonfly, drained by interdimensional bugs and shot by a man-made black hole gun, so yeah, it was a regular day at work.

Did the Japanese government really decide creating a black hole was the best way to deal with Godzilla. Like, they looked at that plan and said “Yeah, let’s do that instead of literally anything else”.
Well, it’s an improvement on the last film at least. Hell, the opening attack is better than the entirety of Godzilla 2000. It’s also one of the highlights of this film. You’ve got Godzilla wrecking shit as a small group of soldiers fight him using rocket launchers. They die of course but it’s still a dope way to open you film.

So, it seems that most people aren't very fond of Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. I can't say that I really blame them. The story is a bit crazy and the effects are pretty janky at times. Although, it's difficult to think of many films in this franchise that don't have crazy storylines. Personally, I think this film's biggest problem is the use of dated CG effects. Perhaps it would've looked more impressive in 2000, as opposed to watching it now in 2019. However, this can be said of many films that came out around that time. Try watching The Mummy Returns, which came out a year after this, and tell me the CG effects…
When you reboot your franchise and then promptly reboot it again (with an opening news reel footage that plays like a "Previously on Godzilla" but edits in a new suit design that rewrites the history of the franchise and relays an attack that wasn't even featured in any of the films at all), this shows no faith in your main monster or your audience and makes everything confusing as hell. The Heisei Era wasn't exactly known for continuity, but that this one ignored all of those and Godzilla 2000: Millennium - the first film in the Millennium Era - makes about as much sense as the way the DCEU has constructed its overarching storyline so far.

Godzilla VS Megaguirus isn't one of the best Godzilla movies, but I nonetheless enjoy it a lot. The story is absolutely ridiculous and fun. The effects are uneven; there is a lot of bad cgi, but there are some really nice effects as well. There is one scene in particular, where the main human character, Kiriko Tsujimori, climbs Godzilla's back, that I think is very well done. Megaaguirus is a cool monster and her final battle with Godzilla is freakin' awesome! Despite its many flaws, Godzilla VS Megaguirus is a movie I enjoy watching from time to time.
After Godzilla 2000 rebooted the series, this follow up reboots the series again... Which is really weird.
This film starts strangely, with news reel footage telling the story of Godzilla. This begins with the content of the original 50s film, but edited to put the new Godzilla design in - a decision I do not care for. Then they announce another Godzilla attack that was not in any other movie, but treat it as a ‘previously on’. The entire events of the previous film are completely overwritten and now we have this.

My first true kaiju film. Yes, I've seen the two American Godzilla films released in the 2010's, but I'm sure that many hardcore kaiju enthusiasts would bite their thumbs at those. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is unique by ignoring every Godzilla sequel that came before it, and positioning itself as the direct sequel to the 1954 Criterion certified classic. It's a very bold move, and it's similar to what David Gordon Green did with his 2018 Halloween movie.

A lead character with a clear goal (Kill Godzilla), a different kind of style (love those horror style monster attacks), and a return to the personality-filled Showa era Kaiju beatdowns. Megaguirus gives a little smile before dropping a building on Godzilla! The delayed monster chomp punchline made me laugh out loud.
I've seen people say that the effects here are cheaper than GODZILLA 2000, but honestly, I prefer them. Give me Godzilla stomping around a couple of hollowed buildings over him comped into a real-life cityscape any day.

The second film of the Godzilla Millennium Era has me scratching my head a bit. The Heisei Era films had a better continuity than the original films (convoluted time travel not withstanding). Here though, second film into the "reboot" and it seems that it not only ignores all the original sequels.. but also the last film?

My first millennium era Godzilla flick and things get off to a rocky start.
Starting with Godzilla's makeover, why mess with perfection? Heisei Godzilla looked amazing! Whenever I thought of Godzilla even before getting into these films his heisei look was what I pictured. It had so much personality, felt so alive, that's not the case with the newly redesigned more lizard like elongated snout they went with here. It feels lifeless in comparison. It's a whole lot better than showa era frog head kid friendly zilla but very disappointing when compared to my absolute favorite iteration of the big guy.
Next it stubbs it's toe with some really bad CGI that probably felt out of date back in 2000.…
