A devastating movie about a young woman, Hazel, being raised by her dad, her gypsy mother has passed away. She is being "courted" by two men - one a squire, forceful misogynist, and the other is the new minister.
She promises her dad she'll marry the first man who asks her to be his wife. The minister wins but the squire takes her away to his mansion. She becomes the talk of the town and the minister is mired in scandal.
Jennifer is fantastic, so beautiful so natural. Her father and the minister are well acted too. The cinematography is beautiful - the Archers shoot the arrow directly in the center of the target.
It has a tragic end - I saw the restored original version - David O Selznick butchered it and cut out 30 minutes and added new footage shot by some one else.
