Goon 2, Goon 2 - Last of the Enforcers
I fought Richard about watching Goon: Last of the Enforcers for DAYS but when you're in a relationship you have to learn to compromise, and by compromise I mean barter/bribe. In exchange for watching this sequel to Goon, he had to agree to watch Monster High and a Don Dohler movie of my choice, the deal was struck, bound in blood.
Every single minute that this movie festered, my smile widened because, per usual, I was right.
Sequels to successful comedies are usually guaranteed to be awful and, not to mention, absolutely unnecessary, who honestly outside of the cast & crew thought "I'd love an expansion of this compelling comedy, a sequel is only a natural progression to this soon-to-be-goon-saga."
Goon:…
My favorite part about Goon is it's not about someone who is good at hockey, but a man that is just trying to be the best person he can be, even if he fails sometimes. Maybe the most culturally significant Canadian franchise, and I'm happy to be represented by Doug Glatt. A good lad.
"Fuck yeah! That's what I'm talking about! Sports!"
Perhaps a bit more nasty than its predecessor while ramping up the emotional stakes and character development for all involved, 'Goon: Last of the Enforcers' was an entertaining, just-as-hilarious follow up to the arguable cult classic of 2011. Introducing a couple of unsavory new characters and bringing back Liev Schreiber's Ross Rhea was a brilliant touch, especially as he and Scott's Glatt get to practice and play together here, and these decisions offer up even more room for hilarity, friendship and rivalries, as brilliantly displayed through the main antagonism of Wyatt Russell's fiery, seemingly depressed star Anders Cain. With a baby on the way, an injury threatening his hockey career further and…
An entertaining albeit completely unnecessary and mostly unfunny sequel. Sean William Scott turns in another solid performance but the rest of the cast just looks bored to be there. It has some funny and sweet moments but it certainly lacks most of the heart and charm of the first film. It okay and watchable at best, but it really didn't need to be made.
Ça a moins l'espèce de... pureté de cœur du col-bleu (?) que le premier possède, mais c'est un film où Sean William Scott explique qu'un hot-dog est une sandwich à la saucisse.
The sequel to perhaps the best hockey film since SLAP SHOT (though admittedly not a crowded field) is a real letdown. The original film was violent but good hearted, this has almost none of the that film's charm and is frankly, kind of miserable. I don't see Jay Baruchel having much of a directorial career.
It tries to be a more mature and complex film as Doug and his team mates deal with getting older in a young mans game. Doug actually spends most of the film retired from playing and working as an insurance salesman, a decision I found ill-advised. It also lightly touches on CTE and mildly critiques hockey parents and the blood-lust of fans (fuck you fighting…
Goon was my movie of the year when it came out. I fucking love that movie. Thank you Jay for a chance to revisit that world and those characters. There were definitely some tears shed.
Go get 'me boys.
I love "naughty" words in movies and they rarely ever bother me, except when it sounds like it's there only to be edgy and it came across like a 12 year old kid trying to be cool. I'm a big fan of the first but this one grated on me pretty bad. Like most comedy sequels it feels completely unnecessary to exist.
A shadow of the first movie, but hey, even with half the laughs and heart of the first movie, it still has a fair amount of laughs and heart.
This is pretty damn close to the first in terms of quality. Feels like Baruchel wanted to remake Rocky 3 and I will never complain about that. Some wicked gore in this one too.
8.5/10
I was surprised when I watched the first goon movie that I actually really enjoyed it. I have zero interest in ice hockey and the marketing didn’t make the film look particularly good but I found it to be one of the funniest films of recent years. What was even more surprising was I made the exact same mistake with the sequel and had low expectations but again surprised myself by genuinely having a great time. It avoids the usual bad sequel problem of rehashing the first film by giving a new story where the characters have further developed and it also managed to retain the original cast. There are a few bits hit and miss but on the whole I found it very funny although (without giving spoilers) at the end I did wish we found out a bit more about what happened with one of the characters.
This never really hits the highs of the original, but it's still a lot of fun. The fights are still great and there's still that same passion for the sport, but the writing is a little off and doesn't work quite as well. That ending is phenomenal though! On a side note, why isn't Wyatt Russell in every movie?!
Painfully unfunny. There is a good amount of heart in the last 15 minutes but it doesn’t make up for the rest. The idea of a hockey battle royale was about the only think that got a chortle out of me.
To be expected, this is not a movie you would watch for the writing, dialogue, cinematography, but it managed to provide some laughs and a plot line that had some shining moments.
Great ending, but odd editing. Overall, a good ending for this character.
Grade: B
i loved it as much as the first!!! totally outrageous, violent and hilarious!!!
