I am a TREMENDOUS fan of films that center on the Italian Mafia, A.k.a. La Cosa Nostra. Lately I've been watching Michael Franzese testimonies on YouTube and it's given me the itch to dive into a mob film. John Gotti was one of the most ballsy, attention craving, stupid, violent, and certainly the most flashy Italian mob boss who ever lived. This is definitely a film for those people who are super interested in the La Cosa Nostra. If you're obsessed with the real-life monsters and the stories that define the downfall of the mob as they knew it in the 80s, this is the film for you.
If not... you'll probably be slightly bored lol.
I also have 0 idea why this was remade into the horrific car crash that was Travolta's 2018 version.

Und Armand Assante spielt sich die Seele aus dem Leib, obwohl die Tatsache, dass ein anderer Darsteller im Film exakt so aussieht wie der echte Gotti, durchaus verwirrt.

• One Of My Favorite Mob Movies .
sopranos-adjacent enough to make an excellent interlude between seasons 4 & 5 for me. if you watched this and Many Saints for a double feature, somewhere along the way you'll likely find a prequel satisfactory to your individual taste
Nothing beats a well-made mob film- especially one that I haven’t seen yet. My favorite genre, this is like a new gem. Gotti (1996) is a deep cut among mob films, and a friggin’ good one too.
I’ve never heard of the actor who played John in this film, but I must say- he’s got some pretty captivating moments. His name’s Armand Asante, and apparently this is (and probably will be) his biggest role. And you also have like half the Sopranos cast in here as well, so that’s a gift to me.
I was surprised how well this film was made and why it was never released in theaters. The cinematography is pretty good, editing is good, acting is mostly good, soundtrack is accurate- it’s a very well made film. I watched it for free on YouTube. So, I highly recommend you watch this film ASAP.
Between this and Tyson, nobody made better biopics than HBO in the 90s.
Watching this after Travolta's film made me realize just how much the latter omitted any context for why John Gotti did the things he did. Assante's movie gives us way more of an understanding of why Gotti hated Paul Castellano, ironically helping us empathize with the Teflon Don way more than a film that was literally created to be pro-Gotti family propaganda.
All the relationships feel more palpable and the characters more defined. Whereas Sammy the Bull was barely a footnote in the Travolta movie, he's a fairly complex and dimensional character in Assante's film. As it turned out, Gotti fucked over Sammy just as much as Sammy fucked over Gotti. The death of Gotti's son Frankie is given much more time to breathe here, whereas it's hardly given any proper respect in the 2018 incarnation (despite a great performance from Travolta)
