  Went and caught this at the New Beverly in 35mm. So glad I saw this in a theater with people, there's such a lovely energy to a crowd enjoying this movie that makes it even better. Yes, people are going to compare this movie to John Wick– and they should– but the best sequence in this movie IMO is a great hospital fight sequence that feels straight out of Shoot 'Em Up, which is fitting given that both this movie and that one are so heavily influenced by Chuck Jones. That's the Giamatti effect, baby! More cartoon action sequences I say!

  There’s a section mid-film where Karen Gillan has a gun and knife taped to her paralyzed arms, swinging them around to fight a trio of hobbled goons, all of them awkwardly trying to kill eachother. During those brief minutes of inspired physical comedy, Gunpowder Milkshake threatens to become something inventive, fun, and different.

  No amount of Gillan swagger, Lena Headey murdering guys with gun-knives, or Angela Bassett doing her best Hammer Girl impression could save this movie though. Remember when people feared studios taking the wrong lessons from Deadpool’s success? Gunpowder Milkshake is that but with John Wick instead. The anachronistic underworld with its own rules and where everyone has a history, the slick neon style, the gunplay-CQC hybrid. All…
