There’s a lot to unpack here so I’ll start of by saying my immediate reaction walking out of the theater was that I liked it, despite having some issues... so I went home and let it simmer for a while...
The first act didn’t jive with me, but once Michael obtained the mask, or for that matter anytime the Shape was on screen I thought it was dynamite, exactly how I’d want to see The Shape shift through houses and streets if I were to make my own Halloween movie. The callbacks didn’t overbear me at all... and for the most part the comedy wasn’t an issue either. I loved Jamie Lee Curtis, the tracking shots, night time fall vibes, John…
“happy halloween, michael”
the thing about the original that’s drawn people in for 40 years is how well it’s crafted: the music, the specific angles and the way the camera swings around. the tension and the mystery of it. but like so many before and after it, this one genuinely great movie fell victim to franchising, which always waters the original down if the rest are compared to it
but honestly? my biggest issue here is my complete lack of interest in michael myers himself: in the original, the mystery works for a single movie, but a lot of that is still due to how well rounded that film came out. the character himself however is still so one-note that i…
Clean and efficient, I guess, but there's nothing here, absolutely nothing, that you couldn't find in a few dozen other modern slashers, and it should probably go without saying that it lacks the original's cheap elegance. Also, sue me, I thought Carpenter's updated score was lame.
"There is always the one girl out there, though, the one that got away. Guys have that... and serial killers have that, the one that got away. 'I had her, the trunk was lined with garbage bags, and then she got away.'"
This Halloween sequel is based on the 1978 John Carpenter film of the same name and also that joke told by Adam Sandler in Funny People.
ok but the halloween theme will never not pop off! sure something scary might be happening onscreen but i’m just in my seat trying not to dance!
