Fuck me. Peerless filmmaking, so much more than just ~bleak~ or Important or whatever. So affected by Anamaria Vartolomei's performance, and the way Diwan handles everything – the judgements, the tone, the design, the restraint, the horror, the determination, the pain of it all - is exemplary. Stuff like this doesn't come around often.
Fuck Bridgitte, bitch will fully climax in front of her friends but she draws the line at abortion!!!
accurate arthouse of miserablism. the technique is flawless, no doubt. Anamaria Vartolomeis doe eyes - scared and agitated one moment, smug and sardonic the next, usually pretty rebellious all of the time - are giving you a focal point.
besides that: the circumstances, the times, oh holy! 60s ain't no fun times for people wanting to have fun. we kinda knew. all the girls are trapped in the zeitgeist, all the boys are heartless, cold pricks or simply heartless, cold pigs. then some shock and body cinema. the ordeal, the martyrdom and - of course - finally the story of resurrection and empowerment.
so all goes along its known but still appreciated path (hence the golden lion in venice). only…
definitely in my top 3 films that were the most painful and uncomfortable to watch, but i'm so glad that it was as graphic and real as it was because it earnestly shows what so many women went through in France and around the world in places where abortion was/still is illegal. the way that it is filmed adds so much to it as well - the close up shots feel invasive but also as if you are one with the main character. you experience betrayal, desperation and many other emotions/feelings at the same time as Anne does, which makes it an always engaging but incredibly agonising watch. very intense but 100% worth it, and is one that i think should be watched by as many people as possible, as it's so massively important.
so fucking bleak, esp in the light of the last few days. looked around the screening room several times and every woman had her head in her hands

merci merci merci audrey diwan et annie ernaux
To the white boy next to me who kept sighing: take your dingling useless member somewhere else.
