Radio personalities Larry Abbot and Vickie Pearle are stars of a mystery show. Since they announced their engagement, Larry has been plagued by speech problems and, seeking out an unconventional cure, he returns to his boyhood home, a mansion in the countryside, bringing Vickie along. Larry reunites with numerous family members, but discovers that there are sinister things afoot within the walls of the creepy estate.

Gene Wilder’s Haunted Honeymoon is an honourable failure. The film is written and directed by Wilder and it contains a-lot of the same visual and comedic motifs associated with his earlier collaborations with Mel Brooks. Whilst I understood what Wilder was going for I felt the film missed the mark both in its comedy and plot. The film was incredibly dull, after watching the film I can barely remember any genuinely hilarious scenes.

Feeling much like a comedic reprisal of traditional horror tropes, taking its inspiration from classics like The Old Dark House (1932), The Cat and the Canary (1939) and House on Haunted Hill (1959) to name a few. Even though there exists a 1925 silent film called The Haunted Honeymoon — considered to be one of the first horror comedies to come out — this is not a remake, neither is it a remake of Haunted Honeymoon (1940). Gene Wilder set out to make a “comedy chiller” that revolved around a thrilling radio program similar to broadcast like The Inner Sanctum.

I can vividly remember the raucous derision aimed at this film when it came out. I was only eleven at the time, so there must have been a lot of noise about how bad this was. I guess I did take an interest because as a kid, Gene Wilder was a real favourite of mine, as was Dom DeLuise and I think I felt bad for them getting roasted so hard. DeLuise in particular seemed to be singled out for the really venomous ridicule for his role in drag as Aunt Kate.
I'd like to say the film was an unjustly panned gem, but it's really not a very good film. I would suggest that the level of histrionic criticism…
This is a film I have always enjoyed. I used to remember watching this back to back with High Spirits and having a grand old time. To be honest it is only recently I have found that a lot of people are a bit underwhelmed by Haunted Honeymoon to say the least. I know it has its faults but I still think it's better than most people give it credit for. Although, that could just be the nostalgia speaking.

I went for a little bit of an odd pick for my America choice, 'Hunted Honeymoon' is a film I've had my eye on for sometime, it's been on my Amazon wishlist for a couple of years but for one reason or another I haven't made the plunge, until it came across my path during a recent shopping trip and I finally got my hands on it.

A sweet gothic comedy about how much Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner love each other.
I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but this is not Wilder's finest work. It's got a nifty first act, and fun set-up and production design, but then Dom DeLuise shows up in a dress and the film takes what can only be deemed a hard turn into NOTHING BUT TROUBLE territory. Not a good thing. Has some great moments but lives up to maybe half its potential.
