  Jason Statham makes existentialist action films. They are neither good nor bad, they just are. Homefront is no exception.

  Homefront is a safe film. It breaks no boundaries, reinvents nothing, it just does what it is supposed to do and there is nothing wrong with that. If you're up for a straightforward action film that has been made millions of times before, you'll probably enjoy watching this. It is scripted by Sylvester Stallone which tells me two things. He can still read and he can still write. Encouraging thoughts keeping in mind his most recent films.

  Avoided this for years thinking it was a dtv pureflix style because of that poster.

  I was pleasantly surprised that it ended up being the old ‘widowed ex DEA agent moves to the sticks to start a new life with his 9 year old and crosses paths with tweaked meth head rednecks led by james Franco’ scenario. Serviceable action yarn akin to something I would watch late at night back in the day—one of those action movies in the weekly fat stack of garbage my dad and I would rent from kingston video with spoils of rc cola and some shitty off brand microwave popcorn.

  So, this was way more entertaining than I expected it to be, but I was already pretty in from the opening scene of Jason Statham undercover as part of a biker gang, including him wearing a bad wig, which is just a bizarre sight to see. That man has always been bald and should always be bald. Anyway, after a frenzied 5 minutes of a bust gone bad, we jump ahead a bit get to the whole “tough ex-cop/military guy has moved to small town for peace and quiet” part.

  James Franco's scene-stealing leftovers from Spring Breakers are in full effect here, from the moment he introduces himself to up until his final scene, he commands the screen as: GATOR BODINE, a backwoods methamphetamine kingpin who loves to bust up piece of shit kindergarten operations with heavy threats and some swinging of his baseball bat. Homefront is a total 70s throwback that delivers it's fair share of action, brutality and small town Louisiana dramatics. There's good hand-to-hand combat fights, a fine cast and a nighttime siege on Statham's home that is real fucking solid, but my favourite part about Homefront is how it opens.   Some surprisingly solid action beats, particularly the penultimate sequence where a bunch of angry bikers raid Statham's house looking for his daughter, but this Sylvester Stallone-penned screenplay would have looked a lot better with its author in the lead role. Statham's American accents are somehow getting worse over time, and the film's new-guy-in-a-small-town persecution paranoia would jive nicely with FIRST BLOOD.

  The supporting cast is good but underutilized. Instead of spending so much time on bland Statham and his bad-child-actress daughter, director Gary Fleder should have focused more on Kate Bosworth, Frank Grillo, and Winona Ryder, all giving good redneck in a variety of small villain roles.
