Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall rap along to “Knuck If You Buck” in this.
Basically a high wire comedy act that tries to do a lot of things without everything landing. Some parts are amazing and some are a bit unneeded. Definitely promising though and could definitely benefit from editing. Still, Regina Hall, Nicole Beharie and Sterling K Brown are excellent. I think the best format for this idea is probably a tv show but still, what a fun movie.

Damn what a stellar directorial debut. Loved the pseudo-documentary style, especially since it also had some genuine drama sprinkled in towards the end. I like how they leaned into that style to the point of even never showing the filmmaker Anita & only hearing her voice once or twice.
The pure satire aspect of this was incredible. I was just cracking up the entire first hour. The Knuck If You Buck scene especially had me rolling. Despite the tonal shift towards more drama at the end being pulled off really well, that caused the movie to lose its appeal for me a little bit in that last half hour. However, whether the tone was comedic satire or drama,…

Regina Hall wins Sundance for me.... because she's bad ass.
I love when a mockumentary is done well. This is very funny. This is very smart. When you combine those things you tend to get something special and that's what this is. The chemistry between the two lead performers is outstanding, the editing is great, and the script manages to do so many things while feeling incredibly simple and approachable. I'd be lying if I said all of the humor worked for me but much of it did and the dramatic parts are quite powerful.
Recommended.
HONK FOR JESUS. SAVE YOUR SOUL could’ve had a tighter edit but Sterling K. Brown & especially Regina Hall do so much heavy lifting they almost raise this religious satire to the heavens. The drama works better than the comedy with Hall delivering one hell of a monologue near the end. Lots of scathing commentary but needed a bit more focus.

Not entirely for me! But please direct me to some good writing on it to learn more
a disturbing portrait of church culture and marriage. regina hall and sterling k. brown are absolutely stellar. great script, but the direction feels a bit distant - which works sometimes, and doesn't work other times. i preferred the more dramatic elements of the film as i felt the comedy never fully commits (maybe the fact that i just finished the righteous gemstones got my hopes too high for another crazy mega church satire). need to sit on this one for a while, but overall i liked it, even if it left me wanting a bit more.

Wasn’t planning on booking this one, but after seeing Cow Who Sang a Song in the Future I need something to brighten the mood. This is a mockumentary and satire about televangelists, it’s funny and entertaining; kinda feels like an episode of Atlanta. Definitely a step up from The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021), if that movie was like this it would’ve been great. I haven’t seen the Gemstones, so I can’t compare this to that, but I heard many good things about it. I love the aspect ratio switching back and forth between cinematic and documentary, the camera feels like a character and I love how it’s utilized feeling like a vlog at times.
The performances…
