There were young children at the screening I attended, and they were laughing throughout. There is hope for the world.
Swordfish.
Generally considered second banana to the (funnier, probably) Duck Soup, but I think this might be my favorite because of the way it better represents what the Marx Bros movies were actually about. Unlike Duck Soup, which strips away everything but the boys' surreal goofery, this has all of the usually-maligned elements of a Marx Bros picture: Zeppo in a boring romance, musical numbers, a maudlin harp solo from Harpo, etc. But here's the thing: "Everyone Says I Love You" is a GREAT song, and Zeppo's romance isn't so boring here (he barely has time to see her with the other three brothers crowding him out).
Pretty much the only thing that's missing is Margaret Dumont, but it's not the movie's fault she forgot the password.
As far as joke success ratio goes, one of the greatest comedies. I mean Harpo destroys Football. More than any other Marx movie, it epitomizes how everything that are great about them also makes them ill-suited for film. I'm even convinced now that the brothers had genuine perverse pleasure stopping the film dead for those Zeppo romantic interludes. Horse Feathers is all about destroying the medium. True anarchy.
I like that Marx Brothers plots are usually just one word. Night At The Opera is “OPERA,” Monkey Business is “BOAT,” and Duck Soup is “NATION.” This one is “COLLEGE.”
Most of these college tropes no longer exist outside of some jokes about Mr. Burns going to Yale from like 1992 and this movie has still aged twenty times better than Animal House.

Horse Feathers is one of my all time favourite Marx Brothers films. I don't think it's their best, but it's one of their funniest.
Set against the prestigious backdrop of Huxley College, Horse Feathers is a sports movie unlike any other. Clean cut without an ounce of fat, this is a speedy 60 minute pre-code comedy that moves at breakneck speed. It has some of the best Groucho/Chico sequences ever, with one of my favourite Zeppo roles too. The conflict in hierarchy between the characters that the brothers play is always interesting, and here the power dynamic is one of the funniest gags. The choice to have Zeppo play Groucho's (Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff's) son…
Horse Feathers is another timeless comedy classic from the inimitable Marx brothers, a farcical tour de force that builds on the success of their earlier films and hones in on the aspects that made them so endearing and serves as a rousing precursor to their much revered fan favourite and comedy masterwork Duck Soup.
The clunkiness of the early sound era is a thing of the past by now, Norman McLeod's camerawork is fluid and energetic, capturing the mayhem of the brothers brilliantly and showcasing some thrilling football game action through mobile cinematography. Groucho is given some of his best lines yet and the siblings seem to feed off one anothers antics better than ever before, with many scenes together…

There it is. After three films of incremental albeit continuous improvement, McLeod learns from his past effort, makes the proper corrections, kicks into overdrive, and finally knocks one out of the park. Shock collars have been removed and this marks the first time the Marx Bros. truly “let loose” and full-blown, inexplicable zaniness is allowed to ensue—you’ve got Harpo shoveling school books into a fireplace, pulling a hot cup of coffee from his pocket, and escaping a room with Chico by maniacally sawing the wooden floor beneath them. It’s borderline batshit, but that’s the medium through which this type of humor thrives ; trims up the fat, coming in under 70 minutes, and the ostensible “story” (the football recruiting…
"If this is a singing lesson, call me a ring-tailed monkey."
"This is a singing lesson and don't bring your family into this"
The Marx Brothers are known for bringing joy to people during The Great Depression. I am completely confident that if you were to show this to a group of younger kids, they would find it funnier than you'd expect. Very high quality film.
Groucho: (enters a biology classroom) Have they started sawing a woman in half yet?
Biology professor: Why, Mr. President, this is indeed an honor! What brings you here?
Groucho: A bicycle, but I left it in the hallway.

Ranking of the Marx brothers by how badly I want to punch them as hard as I can:
5. Zeppo
4. Chico
3. Gummo (for sure trump supporter)
2. Harpo
1. Groucho. Fuck this guy
Jokes landed a few times (the musical number at the beginning was great), but I grew exhausted of this schtick about five minutes in.
Pretty funny. No really memorable gags but the endless wordplay is always exciting. Minor Marx for me
I’m new to the Marx brothers, and I was blown away with how modern this was, especially the sex jokes. If I was rating based on achievement under the conditions of 1932, it would be much higher. That said, I rate on LB based on experience on the day I watch, and for me this was good not great. I was smiling throughout, but I was also rolling my eyes pretty frequently at the volume of dad jokes. Of course, when you make five jokes a minute some are bound not to land. The story is so simple, but just clever enough to give it all the anarchy some structure. I will definitely be watching some more of their films.
The most streamlined Marx mayhem delivery system yet. Gets in and out in 70 minutes with minimal filler. That said, there aren’t any particularly uproarious gags.
"Well, they nailed the ratio of how much Universities care about sports compared to everything else."

Continuing my revisit of all the Marx Brothers films. This is a really solid one with some great comedy set pieces, and a nice supporting turn by the lovely Thelma Todd and a great finale. If you prefer your Marx Brother's films with more comedy and less song and dance than this is a good option.
Original review:
Groucho is a professor at a not so prestigious college who wants to help the football team win the big game so he hires two ringers to play. Only problem is he inadvertently gets the wrong guys and ends up with Chico and Harpo. Another zany Marx Brothers adventure with less emphasis on songs and no superfluous love story this time just lots of very funny moments and an especially memorable finale at a football game the likes of which you have never seen before.
Such a treat of a film. I get that the Marvelous Marxs are not for everyone, but good lord I think they were the best. Horse Feathers is always in the shadow of its follow up film Duck Soup. But while Duck Soup is the more beloved film, i think Horse Feathers could actually be the perfect Marx Brothers film.
It has all of their trademarks and more. Ben Hecht himself couldn't write dialogue as fast and witty as this.
It's so short it breezes by and it's so funny you lose yourself in it. It's so quick you forget it has a length to begin with. Does that make sense? Who cares? Whatever it is that made these brothers so hilarious, I'm [not] against it.
I know I know everything makes that joke when talking about this movie, but why wouldn't you?
