alternative titled “the 16 year old girl that gets pushed around and used by not 1, not 2 but THREE different annoying men with suppressed problems and emotions projected in their behaviour towards her that in turn screws over her self esteem completely and makes her cry every other 10 minutes”
it’s a shame that the plot was such a shit show because i liked some of the cool artsy shots and oversaturated scenes. i didn’t really get why they kept inserting stuff on film or photos or shit tho. some of it was really pretty it sucks that every other aspect of this film made me wanna stab myself

A teenage love story that feels like a fever dream. Lots of respect for the way how confident this was directed, some shots and especially the editing are insane, not only makes this up for a wild viewing experience, but also a very fun one. Especially the second half in nightlife Tokyo has some visually outstanding scenes. The writing itself has some emotional moments that work very well, but there are also moments where it falls flat and seems unnecessary, where it becomes too melodramatic at times. But in the end its something you watch for the audiovisual experience, and in that area it’s something refreshing and original.
If Tetsuya Nakashima and Hideaki Anno ate shoujo mangas and Jane Austen novels for breakfast then vomited the pages out you'd maybe have something like Hot Gimmick.
It's a disjointed fever dream of strange and rapid dialogue, hyper-edits and visual style that confused the fuck out of me but I loved every second of it.
She must be trying to relay the nightmare of being a teenage girl. Sadly I think people will just write it off as a romance movie or comic adaptation that 'isn't doing it right' when it's obviously something more.
Bold for a Netflix original.
One of the most misunderstood films I've ever seen. Yuki Yamato's Hot Gimmick: Girl Meets Boy almost seems like a title for a movie that must suck, and maybe this film was destined to fail from the very start, because so many people just misinterpret and hate this film for stylistic choices and decisions that weren't just amateurish or made on the fly; rather it was more like everything was already carefully planned out and on purpose from the very beginning.
Beautifully erratic editing and cinematography fills this whole film, and it may be a bit too much for others but for me it was just so unique, interesting and so gorgeous that I fell in love with all of…
When the dude said let's do it raw I LOST it.
On a more serious note this is some of the most toxic bullshit I have ever witnessed and I'm fairly sure the editor was hella high during the entire process. Nice cinematography though.
I'm still not sure if this was an indictment of toxic masculinity or an exemplar of its prevalence, but man - those camera angles and edits. It's definitely one of the more stylish manga adaptations of recent memory, but it's seriously weird, man. And I say that while watching the first episode of the 1990 musical cop drama series Cop Rock.
Would not recomend wasting your time on this terribel movie.
The male carakters are all mentaly ill.
The girl is stupid and annoying.
Everyone in this movie needs a haircut!
Almost every caracter is horrible written and does not behave like a human beeing.
The over all cinematography looks like a dream of an edgy tumbler girl. And the story is shit.

I'm at the point where it's just fucking exhausting to talk about stuff I hate. Every time I talk about stuff I hate, it just makes me angry and feel like complete shit. So I think I'm done. Going forwards, if there's something I hate to this degree, it'll be a few words or just a rating because I'm done with these conversations. They make me feel horrible and I want to stop them. I hate this movie but I don't want to talk about it. That's it.
Edit: This movie makes me feel fucking sick whenever I think about it. Moved to 0/10.
The cinematography was trying to do 10 things at once and failing, the acting was so bad it hurt, and out of 3 love interests the best one was her ADOPTED BROTHER because at least he didn’t drug her or use her as a slave
Absolutely trailblazing, few films out there are this confident, obtuse and genuine as this one. Some of the most emotional writing I have ever seen in a film, it's like feelings being portrayed in how they exist in our subconscious mind rather than how they are interpreted through the limits of language. Constantly exploiting problematic behaviours removing it of its artifice and showing the unconditional humanity behind them. Hatsumi is abused and goes through plenty of trauma but even though shes sensitive, there is always a sense of confidence in herself and being able to stand up for herself through her limited worldview.
The three guys that she drifts between all represent values that are constantly attacking her in positive…
