  It should be so easy to root for “Hotel Artemis.” An original, star-studded, somewhat sci-fi crime thriller in a summer movie season that’s already bloated with sterile franchise junk, Drew Pearce’s directorial debut is exactly the kind of mid-budget divertissement that cinema needs to survive. In theory, at least.

  Taking a John Wick-inspired premise and working Reservoir Dogs-esque wonders around it, Hotel Artemis is a stylish and snappy directorial debut from Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation scribe Drew Pearce, with terrific performances, great dialogue and atmosphere, beautiful cinematography, really cool world-building, enjoyable characters, and fun action sequences, even if there isn't a lot of them.

  whoa wtf where did this come from? and why is it not bad? doesn't take as much advantage of the solid—overtly John Wick inspired—premise as it could, mostly fumbles the explosive action in the final 20 and its attempt at evoking topical politics is... unfortunate, but its first 70 mins are admirably vicious, consistently suspenseful, feature a handful of finely-tuned performances (at least 4 major cast members are doing work way beyond what the screenplay calls for) and chung chung-hoon shoots the shit out of them. sunday afternoon cable thrillers could do much worse than this.

  I was rooting for Jodie Foster the moment the film started. It wasn't a great beginning, but I tried imaging why she chose the script. It got progressively worse until thinking my rating would be 5/10, slowly went down to 4/10, then finally 3/10. Jeff Goldblum is good in it, but only has a few minutes of screentime.

  I applaud seeing limited-budget, original (well, kind of), Sci-Fi efforts make it to the multiplexes amidst the familiar comfort food that the Summer Movie Season tends to offer up. However, unlike the surprising B-movie thrills that came while watching "Upgrade", Drew Pearce’s directorial debut barely reaches the level of serviceable time killer.
