If sordid psycho-noirs are your cup of tea, Hounds of Love is definitely a well-crafted film showcasing an up-and-coming directorial talent in Ben Young. However, if sordid psych-noirs require thought-provoking ends to warrant suffering through, the questionable creative license and moral simplifications on display here prove to be quite puzzling, if not outright demoralizing.
Based on a string of actual abductions and killings that occurred in Perth, Australia in the late 80s, and became infamously known as the Moorhouse Murders, the film very loosely recounts the final case in David (John, in the film) and Catherine (Evelyn, in the film) Birnie's spree of heinous crimes.
