An authentic time warp in look and vibe but it felt too formulaic in it's approach to the coming of age drama.
Feldstein is the right performer with the wrong voice, getting close but not always nailing the Wolverhampton accent, which kept distracting from fulling buying in to the story. Allen also slipped up with his Welsh accent to a lesser degree but his role wasn't as large so mattered less.
Though it was trying to say bold things about how, inexperience, gender, class and size are all obstacles to navigate growing up, the film wasn't brave enough to counter the troupes of the genre, keeping it unremarkable.
Also far too much to cringe about in this movie.
To my mind "Raised by Wolves" remains the best thing Caitlin Moran has authored in this vein.
