  Human Nature is a brilliant documentary because it is balanced, but not balanced in the forced, dishonest way that some documentaries are. Where one side complains they aren’t heard enough when more than likely that side has terrible ideas. It’s not balanced in a way that feels insincere to the director’s thesis, where there is an inclusion of a people that have no right competing with experts, like a movie about stem-cell research that a group of Sunday school teachers want to give their scientific view on. It is balanced, rather, in the cold, philosophical way that scientific dilemmas present decisions that need to be made.   I've been reading about some pretty exciting breakthroughs regarding CRISPR techniques battling COVID, so after seeing another update to the list of 2020 Oscar documentary submissions -- thanks as always Ken Rudolph! -- I figured today was a great day to get to this acclaimed film on one of the most exciting scientific discoveries of this century.

  (That list is so daunting. You all know how many documentaries I watch, but I've only seen a quarter of this year's Oscar submissions! Crazy.)

  This is one of the better docs I’ve seen in school. It's a compelling deep-dive into CRISPR that manages to be simultaneously broad and incredibly specific. It's well shot, and the interviews are really good, so I’m disappointed this didn’t get an Oscar nomination. However, it’s nothing truly special or thought-provoking, so I suppose I understand that. However, this was an excellent way to spend a few class periods. I'm pro-CRISPR, and anti-designer babies, in case anyone... wasn't? I don't know, we talked about it as a class and that seemed to be the consensus. Solid documentary, but not top-tier.

  Science has moved incredibly quickly over the past decade or so. It's moved so fast, in fact, that certain technologies are being developed without anybody ever knowing about it. Medicine is one of these areas that is growing the fasted with it's advancements in gene therapy.

  Human Nature, the debut feature from filmmaker Adam Bolt, focuses squarely on the development of gene therapy, specifically through the process of CRISPR, and the moral and ethical questions that go along with it's development. It's a fascinating feature, and one that is ridiculously well made for a debut feature.

  my aunt marie is a chemistry professor and we watched this together to celebrate emmanuelle charpentier and jennifer a. doudna winning the nobel peace prize in chemistry for their discovery of the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing tool. this was super cool also i can’t stop thinking about the human trees in annihilation (2016).
