I expected nothing from this movie. The trailer reminded me of TAU (2018) and I anticipated it to fall into the same category as most of the other Netflix SciFi originals. Shockingly, this one turned out to be solid. The interesting character exploration was intriguing me throughout the first act. I was getting Room mixed with Ex Machina vibes. Then, you get into the final act that harkens to movies like Terminator and 10 Cloverfield Lane. Not that this film has to measure up in terms of quality but the callbacks are obvious. I call them callbacks (and not ripoffs) because they feel genuine.

Small-scale science fiction that will inevitably remind genre-savvy viewers of Moon and Ex Machina in equal measure, and that's no bad thing. Really strong performances, terrific robot special effects (it looks like CGI, but it's a robo-suit), and a particularly well-defined environment boost this story up beyond its somewhat basic narrative, which feels like a throwback to Terminator-era science fiction, in a way that makes the more sophisticated modern visuals kind of startling. Not philosophically challenging or thoughtful about AI/human relationships, but thoroughly entertaining on a "What's going to happen next?" basis.
I Am Mother felt very artificial and manufactured in the same way most Netflix originals do. With its shallow world building and a script that leaves the viewer ultimately unsatisfied by the end, it just becomes another empty attempt at a high-concept sci-fi film.
7/10
I really liked the story here, as it felt like an original take on something we’ve seen before in some terrific sci-fi works. Apocalyptic stories are all similar in the dystopian future but it’s how the story is told that separates them. This one runs as a mystery for a large portion, but becomes a little obvious towards the end.
Clara Rugaard is going to be someone to watch out for. I loved her performance as Daughter. Hilary Swank was good, but mostly just there to push the story. Rose Byrne’s VO as mother was terrific. It’s kind of comforting and yet also haunting. It makes the film in my opinion.
Overall a very solid film that is an easy recommend in Netflix for any sci-fi fan especially.

"Have I ever been wrong before?"
God, it's nice seeing Hilary Swank in a leading role again. It's been far too long and she's a consummate talent who's proven again and again that she deserves more rewarding work.
If there's a performance that I Am Mother will come to be known for though, it's Clara Rugaard's. As our protagonist, Rugaard delivers a breakthrough performance that perfectly matches Swank's. And let's not forget about the titular Mother, voiced by the always excellent Rose Byrne.
I'm beginning to sound like a broken record but original sci-fi is my jam. It doesn't get much better than when it's as polished and well-realized as this. Grant Suppore, I'll be watching your career with great…
