The last time that Amy Schumer starred as the female lead of a major romantic-comedy, her casting was treated as some kind of subversive act. And, to a certain extent, maybe it was. On the one hand, a blonde, white, able-bodied comedienne on 3,000 movie screens probably shouldn’t be hailed as the Jackie Robinson of meet-cutes just because she wasn’t Weird-Scienced by a focus group of horny teenage boys in a secret Hollywood lab (“I’m probably like 160 pounds right now and can catch a dick whenever I want,” Schumer memorably declared the month before “Trainwreck” opened). On the other hand, when some male critics are inspired to say things like “there’s no way she’d be an object of heated…
If I'm being perfectly honest, for as derivative -- comparisons to Big, What Women Want, and Shallow Hal are justified -- and admittedly questionable as its core premise is, I honestly think it has legitimate potential to be a smart, provocative, funny comedy. However, I Feel Pretty is anything but. It takes the completely WRONG direction with this idea, resulting in what is quite honestly one of the most embarrassing fucking things I have ever seen in theaters.
Amy Schumer's protagonist is supposed to be the relatable everywoman character we're meant to identify and sympathize with seeing as she's insecure and not particularly confident about herself and she's average-looking -- by the standards of Hollywood that is, because let's be…
a movie focused on celebrating those women who don’t fit into conventional beauty standards through the power of giant capitalist corporations that help create the toxic standards of beauty this film’s railing against. also those women being celebrated? all cis, mostly white women, the only women who are worth celebrating are ones that fit into this narrow view of womanhood that the film should be opposing. despite its pretences, this film is only for women that are traditionally acceptable. this is some terf ass bullshit. plus the only remotely queer people in the movie are used for a punchline so that you can laugh at drunk amy schumer. this makes the world a worse place. also it’s seven hours long
this movie really meant a lot to me as someone who has struggled with body dysmorphia my entire life. it will probably get unfairly judged bc of the sheep mentality hate against Amy Schumer, but I Feel Pretty is actually really funny & has a great message. defenitly found a new comfort film!
the conceit of this movie is gross and like... extremely incorrect lol. confidence may change how others treat you i guess but if you inhabit a truly non-normative body it rly doesnt matter how you feel about yourself. people will still treat you like you're an ugly piece of shit! which i guess is.. kind of the point, because the subtext of every interaction amy schumer has with a hotter, thinner white woman is one of perplexed mockery (how could someone who is so clearly hideous believe she could ever be anything else? that's the whole entire joke of the whole entire movie!) which, ime, is pretty accurate. but i'm not sure how that fits into a comedy film where…
1 hour and 50 minute version of that tweet that says “goodnight girls and gays remember that skinny is a feeling not a size”
I had more fun with I Feel Pretty than I feel like I had a right to. I had heard about the premise so I didn't feel so resistant to the absurdity of it and just had a good time overall.
I woke up the next morning laughing, thinking about Michelle Williams' voice in this and how she should do more comedy.

Funny, nice, fumbled the part where they act like everything is going to end badly but then of course it doesn't. Overall, worth a watch.
