Writer/director Dan Mazer tries to tell a romantic comedy from a different angle, focusing on two unsuitable newlyweds (played by Rose Byrne & Rafe Spall) who—despite having nothing in common—haphazardly try to make a go of it.
From the off I Give It A Year really dials up the cringe humour (which I guess makes sense considering Mazer has also co-written all of Sacha Baron Cohen’s movies). Some moments here really get the awkward/funny mix right down, but I think this often just relies on that particular style in a way that starts to feel like a crutch.
Mazer having a background in more sketch-based work also explains why the film feels kind of disjointed/lopsided in the story it’s telling, dialling…
It's a shame they can't put your brain in her body…D'you know what I mean? That would be amazing!

I gave it 97 minutes and the film failed to make me care about anyone in it's story. It's a criss-cross romantic comedy involving four main characters, with two of them being completely unlikeable. Seriously, am I supposed to care about Rose Burne and Simon Baker's characters because their attractive and successful because that's all there is to both their characters.
Rafe Sall is a bit more likeable, but you spend most of the film feeling sorry for him because his wife (Burne) and her family are continually treating him like shit. You don't watch the film wondering if their…
Film #100 of The December Challenge 2013
I made it the end of the December project 2013! Just barely!!!
I love refreshing takes on the romantic comedy genre and I Give it a Year does just enough to be in that category. By throwing in a bunch of rom com clichés and very loudly announcing them, it serves as a slightly subversive take without completely breaking free of the genre's functions. It tells the story of a couple who had a fairytale romance right up until the wedding and how everything went to shit right after. They are completely incompatible and make each other miserable, but they feel compelled to keep trying to make the marriage work because they don't…
Rarely has a film so consistently failed to end a painfully unfunny bit. Scene after scene drag on much longer than necessary, forcing you to be a part of some truly uncomfortable moments as it searches for a laugh. Watching it was actually a stressful experience; the director is often far too happy to sit with cringe humour, long after the modicum of amusement it might've conjured up had worn off. Stephen Merchant was a breath of fresh air for the story, as the only cast member who could somewhat consistently generate actual laughter. And even then, he wasn't exactly Sean Lock (rest in peace, you comic genius).
When it isn't indulging in awkward comedy it hardly fares much better.…
I Give It A Year is a romantic comedy from England. In this one Rose Byrne and Rafe Spall get married and most people do not think the marriage will last a year. By 9 months they even doubt it themselves...as Spall's former love, Anna Faris, and Byrne's new client, Simon Baker, show up and seem like better partners for the newly weds. Can they make it to their one year anniversary? The answer to that question comes in more than a few funny situations. It comes from the producers of Love Actually and Bridget Jones' Diary...and is a pretty good date night movie.
Minnie Driver and Jason Flemyng are the best part of this movie.
In the words of Nat, “ I will never have to see you again. Never.”
I'm not sure how this anti rom-com evaded me. It often goes over the top but is a fun piece of counter-programming to the regular genre bait with bouts of outrageous humour that made me laugh out loud.
I can live without the second-rate covers of noughties pop songs which populate the soundtrack but there are likeable actors playing unlikeable people and for the most part I felt in the mood to go along with the wanton absurdity. It might be worth watching for Olivia Colman's role as a bored marriage counseller.
It would be easy to take objection against the audacity and the lead balloon comedy of Stephen Merchant isn't for everyone, but each time he was on screen he seemed to channel Gareth from The Office and I'm not ashamed to admit I found him hilarious.
