The unexpected hybrid of Where the Wild Things Are and A Monster Calls that I never knew I wanted, I Kill Giants manages to do an admirable job of forging its own path as opposed to ripping those films off, and it also offers a heartfelt story with strong messages and a compelling protagonist brought to life by a terrific central performance from Madison Wolfe.

If you guys don't know- I'm a huge fan of graphic novels. I love books too but something has always had me in love with comics, which probably was passed by my father who used to read me superhero comics, has a collection of thousands of comics in his closet and has colored notable issues of Uncle Scrooge and even Batman.
If you guys actually want to hear my thoughts on comics, you can follow my instagram page @artpigreviews where I review two every week.
If you guys do follow me there, you would know that a few weeks ago I read the Image comic I Kill Giants. I wrote in the review that…

At times this film can be very compelling and almost creepy in the way it portrays schizophrenia mixed with the imagination of children. Ultimately and unfortunately this turns rather bland and conventional. The Harry Potter producers featured on the poster is misleading as this is nowhere near as magical or enchanting.
There is an awkward balance of tone between depressing broken home story and fantasy. It never really finds a comfortable middle ground there, and things tend to become melodramatic when they should be treated a bit more serious.
This is pretty much exactly like A Monster Calls but not as well executed.
All things that live in this world die. this is why you must find joy in the living, while the time is yours. and not fear the end. to deny this is to deny life. but ... to embrace it. can you embrace it? you are stronger than you think.
Word for word, shot for shot, scene for scene, this was just a faithful adaptation without a doubt! and i'm still crying while writing this! i absolutely adore the graphic novel and i read it when i was very young, but that comic stayed with me for a long time, because, i know, i felt that, the lost of a loved one, and seeing it now on the big screen…
Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe) is a young girl with a big imagination. So big indeed she believes that she is defending her small coastal Long Island town from giants hell-bent on its complete and utter destruction.
Barbara is the 'weird kid' at school but seems to be at peace with this even though the local bullies aren't and either is her new school psychologist Mrs. Mollé (Zoe Saldana) who desperately wants to help her get back in touch with reality.
Her only companion is Sophia (Sydney Wade), the new girl at school who has just arrived from England and sees beyond her peculiarities, recognising a fellow lonely little girl who just like her could really do with a good friend.…
This movie has major nerdy sword boy energy. While I’ve spent many of my sheltered formative years running from that energy, I do find it’s sweaty, BO-infused embrace to be warm and comforting...
