1990 Directed by Tobe Hooper
An ancient Aztec cloth with a curse accidentally finds its way into the possession of a young woman. She decides to make a dress from the cloth. Whoever wears this cloth/dress comes under its spell; all inhibitions and moral responsibilities are lost.
If nothing else this movie taught me what cottage fries are.. I had never heard of them before?? I love learning about potatoes!!
Tobe Hooper directs this wack Fear Street knockoff where Shelly from Twin Peaks finds a haunted mummy dress that makes her. . . dangerous. After slipping on the evil gown, she becomes a wild delinquent who ditches her bedridden grandma to dance seductively at a college formal. Lots of amazing early '90s baggy fall fashions and a supporting turn from Anthony Perkins as a cursed object occult expert push the movie over the top. The plot gets kinda muddled halfway through, the pacing feels slack, and Hooper doesn't go ape enough with the premise. But if you can find the tape, I'm Dangerous Tonight is a fun enough way to kill 90 minutes and fill in more esoteric patches of the Texan horror maestro's filmography.
How come nobody told me that Tobe Hooper churned out one of the low-key gayest horror movies of the 90s? I know this is based on a Cornell Woolrich novella, but it plays out more like a perverted take on Teen Witch or any number of other Disney Channel teen girl empowerment movies. only with Mädchen Amick fighting with Dee Wallace over control of a deadly dress made from an Aztec mummy's burial shroud. Between giving Anthony Perkins and Natalie Schafer roles and at times exposing and lingering on more male flesh than female (including a shower murder), I can only really wonder just how much of the camp value is intentional.
Wholly watchable and unremarkable tv thriller. Peaks when Madchen Amick does a sexy dance to midi conga music that's str8 outta Wave Race 64.

Amy is such a wet nice girl. She gets used for everyone's errands, doing peoples coursework, dressmaking for her aunt, grannysitting. Eurgh cmon girl
Praise be that a cursed cape exists, and brings some excitement into Amy's life. When the material comes into contact with someone it brings out their inner demon. Guess what, she makes it into a dress - and it looks good!

However, that doesn't mean a film like I'M DANGEROUS TONIGHT is as impactful as say, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, SALEM'S LOT, or LIFEFORCE. But the obsession with masterpieces overshadows the ways that such masters bring their mastery to more humble, simplistic even, endeavors. Hooper made incredible films for television, it's actually kind of unreal what he achieved in that format, and I'M DANGEROUS TONIGHT is no exception. Maybe I’m naive, but I keep watching Tobe Hooper’s films in a desperate attempt to feel that he’s more than just a lucky shot in the 70s. In the case of I’m Dangerous Tonight, I suppose Hooper has some ambitions, but they’re suffocated in the small cage that is the format of a tv-movie, with stilted cinematography and dialogues devoid of humanity. The idea of a murderous dress does sound silly, but Hooper’s choice to make it more of a power taking control over its victims rather than to make the dress itself murder people is wise. These horror sequences are unfortunately the only thing marginally passable here, with a certain mood as people are overtaken by the furious fabric…

Tobe Hooper’s Lifetime Network ready CHRISTINE, only the car is a killer dress (better yet, an IN FABRIC precursor?), with Madchen Amick playing Killer Coed Elaine Benes. Not nearly as good as any of that sounds, but Tony Perkins blows the fucking roof off the joint with his histrionic anthropology professor from Hell. Crazy that something this mad was masterminded for TV.
Narratively we're looking at Salem's Lot: The Remake (note that Tobe's own Salem's Lot is a far stronger film than this), but formally this is Hooper travelling right on back to 1969, recalling many of the greatest moments from something like Eggshells (the focus on human beings but more importantly the fact that these human beings are defined by a temporal understanding of their location) with a little less accomplishment (the overwhelming fervor of Hooper's early work is sorely missed in some of his nineties work but luckily the incredibly real focus on tone above all else would be revisited and improved upon by the time he made The Mangler).

Goofy-ass killer-dress made-for-tv movie directed by Tobe Hooper and bursting at the seams with genre movie acting talent. Anthony Perkins, Dee Wallace, Marchen Amick, and R. Lee Ermey are all in this, some of them playing sort of against type roles that are very fun to see them in. Like Ermey is playing an actual character, and Wallace is like a psychopath in this. It’s all pretty fun, though told in that kind of choppy way that TV movies can be a bit hampered by. I wish there were a little more to recommend here, but it was worth buying the Spanish region DVD that this was only ever released as just to see such an oddity.

This movie is about a killer dress! Has a pretty awesome cast (Madchen Amick in her TWIN PEAKS days, R. Lee Ermey, Anthony Perkins) and it’s directed by Tobe Hooper. It’s a pretty bad movie as you can expect with that premise but it’s a pretty decent time with some buddies (like the first time I watched it) or in a Twitch chatroom (this rewatch).
Tobe Hooper directs this okay made for TV horror movie about a fabric that makes the wearer kill and go full Mr./Mrs. Hyde! An excellent Five Minutes Game entry and a potential IN FABRIC prequel.
So there is a TON of new stuff I could have watched tonight. Psycho Goreman is out on VOD, so is Synchronic. Shudder has their new original Hunted, along with the first season of that random OTHER Walking Dead spin-off show. It's even the last night to catch WW84 on HBO Max before it disappears until who knows when. Not to mention I still haven't finished Queen's Gambit or Wayne (I think it's called Wayne- the Prime show), AND I got a brand new shipment of movies in from Vinegar Syndrome.
