I get it. Citizen Kane is a good movie. Amadeus is a good movie. If you put them together surely you'd expect to have a good movie.
The coda of Ode To Joy absolutely does feel like floating in the stars though.

It's as if it reality isn't beautiful enough. Everything in Immortal Beloved revolves around the mysterious letter 'An die unsterbliche Geliebte', which was found after Beethoven's death in 1827. Which woman is entitled to this title? After the death of the composer (Gary Oldman), director Bernard Rose lets admirer and secretary Anton Schindler (Jeroen Krabbé) look for the anonymous lover. Life and work, but of course especially Beethoven's loves, are presented in flashbacks by this setup. Three candidates are reviewed: a passionate pupil, a wayward maecenas and a popular sister-in-law.

This movie just confirms that he was (and still is) one of my favourite dramatic actors of all time. I would have liked to do a back to back movie viewing today of Amadeus and Immortal Beloved but alas reality is disappointing. If i'd wanted to see something so boring, i would've seen a documentary about my own life
Despite its grandiose opening, dark imagery and a typically wonderful Gary Oldman performance, IMMORTAL BELOVED falls short of becoming an essential music biopic. Bernard Rose utilises some of his gothic and horror inspiration from CANDYMAN to provide some well crafted scenes with blood, murder, rape and war depicted in great detail that will make those with the hardest of heart's gasp. The film is not particularly easy to access for a viewer not familiar with Beethoven outside of his musical numbers. I did enjoy the fact the rock star nature of the stars of today were still visible in those creative minds from years gone by but I would have liked to have seen other areas of his life explored.
The film appears to be a passion project for Rose and fair play to him, he helps generate another fine role for Oldman, it's just a shame the film lacks something.
When I told my mom I was watching this movie, she was like "Oh yeah I watched that in theaters while you were in the womb."

While the film and stage versions of Amadeus will always speak to me on a more personal level, this sumptuous and glorious biopic of Ludwig van Beethoven does a far better job of telling the tale of an incredibly complex musical genius than a giggling Tom Hulce ever could, and weaves his life story around unravelling a longstanding mystery surrounding an unsent letter found after his death, addressed only to his "Immortal Beloved".
