In & of Itself, Derek DelGaudio's In and of itself
everyone talking about David Wain and Tim Gunn sobbing, no one talking about Larry Wilmore and maybe Adepero Oduye just kind of like vaguely smiling ????? the incredible whiteness of letterboxd smdh did this summer mean nothing to you fools
anyway this made me SOB regardless of what i actually think about the show and I think that’s great. I MISS THEATER I WANT TO CRY WITH STRANGERS ESPECIALLY RICH WHITE ONES love, Ayo :)
Also last thing I’ll say is that I DO believe all good magicians have done a deal with the devil and I don’t have to explain myself and I don’t want anyone saying anything about it!
[Derek walks over to me]
DEREK: You are...
[tears are welling in my eyes]
DEREK: ...a corny ass bitch
[I sit down nodding weeping and smiling. He sees me]
I am actually such a CAB because this all worked on me! It’s fun to be a rube!
Shout out to David Wain’s cameo in the audience absolutely losing his shit and sobbing like I would have if I was there. Four and a half stars!
This is very hard for me to write, but this show reminded me a lot of the suicide note that I've been writing in my head for awhile.
For the better part of a year now, I've been struggling with a label that's been assigned to me by others. Over the course of that time, that label has taken a toll on me. It's cost me friends. It's damaged my dreams. It's plunged me into the kind of darkest despair that I had only heard about before and feels impossible to escape. I have been struggling with the new reality that this label might be the only thing that I'm known as for the rest of my life when there…
I need to talk a little bit about the worrying mini-phenomenon of Hulu's 'In & Of Itself'. I watched it the other day, rated it three stars, and felt like it was a pretty impressive (if a little melodramatic) filmed performance of an Off-Broadway hit show that sees a magician emotionally connect with his audience in a way that other performers only dream of doing. I won't spoil how Derek DelGaudio goes about achieving this because the film works best if you go in cold so you can have an organic reaction, but the show has been raved about by every famous celebrity and their mother, from Bill Gates to Patton Oswalt to Neil Gaiman to Julia Louis-Dreyfus, etc. I suppose…
”…and knowing you won’t believe me,
that’s the only reason
I’m going to tell you the truth”
Derek DelGaudio has created something truly in & of itself...
It’s conceptual, it’s emotional, and it’s wonderful.
Turn off the phone, turn off the lights, experience it and then tell me...
”What have you become?”
A one-man show without many flaws,
Evident from each card that he draws.
It's all relevant,
To an elephant,
Brought to you by the Wizard and Oz.
"I'm not just defined by what you see. I'm also defined by all the things you will never see.
I'm struggling to find the words to define what exactly is this new film from Frank Oz. The genre is stated as "Documentary", but I find it very hard to just label it as that and move on. There is something truly special wrapped up in Oz's newest work, his first true directorial piece since the original Death at a Funeral in 2007. It's at once a magic show, a performance piece, and a honest revelation of who this magician DerekDelGaudio is. The ideas of self-identity, purpose, the magical wonder of personhood and magic itself are so well intertwined here that…
In & of Itself is the definition of a hidden gem that needs to be discovered by the masses. With similar vibes and storytelling techniques to Bo Burnham (using magic instead of music), DelGaudio captivates the audience and delves into a vast amount of meaningful conversations. His impactful and thought-provoking discussions were something that you would never expect to work well with various magic tricks and illusions, and what he was able to accomplish is awe-inspiring, to say the least. So, all in all, DelGaudio seamlessly blends humor, magic, and introspection in his 90 minute special that entrances the viewer from the start. I cannot recommend In & of Itself enough. Please watch it ASAP.
It’s a one man performance that’s meaningful, beautiful and emotionally heavy all in one. You just have to give it a watch to experience it.
The only thing I have to say is I was bawling my eyes out up until I noticed David Blaine and Bill Gates and I was a little taken out, but brought back in at the very end.
A little slow at times and I could deal without the dramatic undertones. But, it’s a different spin on magic and manipulation.
Woah woah woah. Coolest magic, lyrical, spoken word, one man show I’ve ever seen. Very emotional and attention grabbing. Wish I could’ve seen the show in person!
whenever art is like, "I dare you to not be moved, to not be amazed, to give me a bad review", I'm like, "WELL, WATCH ME BITCH."
the visuals were nice, kinda felt like he was hating on his mom for being gay a little, also hated the “i cried myself to sleep because i knew i’d never have a dad again” line. As an anxious person i feel like i constantly think about other people’s lives and my worth as an individual and how every person in the world around has different things going on every minute of every day so to me this movie was not necessarily a “come to god” moment as some others who watched it are feeling. i feel like others should just be introspective without needing some man to tell them to be. Also as a lesbian i feel like his…
Ho. Ly. Shit. Very powerful and very loving. An intricate mix of sleight of hand and identity. Moving
On my ranking lists this will be hard to place because it’s less a film and more a filmed performance but as a performance it’s incredibly powerful. So utterly human and significant, I haven’t felt something touch me as much as this in quite some time. Everyone should watch this
gave me EXTREME fomo that I didn’t get to go to the show. Fully convinced this man has magic abilities
