"Infection" (Kansen) is a 2004 J-horror that takes place entirely within a hospital where a small number of doctors and nurses try to cope with a large number of patients with fewer and fewer supplies available. The generalized stress causes them to make a serious mistake that results in the death of a patient and from there begins an agonizing spiral of events that will gradually consume their sanity and their bodies.
The impression we get from the title and poster is that it's a film about a lethal infectious disease or zombies but, in fact, like other J-horrors from the same era, "Infection" is about a spiritual…
Oh, how I wish to go back being me during the mid to late-2000s watching and being terrified of mainstream J-Horror. Nobody is doomed. Most of the true horror left off-screen. Performances that aren't heavy enough. The green goo. Nice ambience of the unknown. An exploration of workplace overload to wasted usage of supernatural nonsense that isn't warranted enough.
J-Horror slime, dripping with dread and a case of discomforting thoughts, this hospital backdrop flick is slow, unsettling, and worth the 90 minutes of bleakness. Infection promises the infected premise and also delivers on the spooks that would accustom a Japanese horror set in such a dreary area. There's a chew of characters to get use to in its first act—all who are either doctors or nurses and nothing other than that—and its slow pace doesn't get moving until the craziness enters. Sure, it does take an interesting and confusing turn, and there really could have been a lot more action spread throughout—however, from its second half and onwards, Infection proves to be a somewhat successful churn of great atmosphere and creepiness, enough to make it very worthwhile.
3.4/5
Day 5, a film set in a hospital.
The most used up and spent hospital you can imagine. With a green hue.
The staff are overworked, tired, not too experienced, and they come over as a bunch of no use eejits.
Green goo infection (I enjoyed the body rot), or a case of the cracked loonies. You decide.
Even by the standard of some Asian horror films in the last 20 years or so, Infection stands out as one of the craziest of them all.
Set in a decrepit hospital seemingly on the verge of being shut down for good (once you see what the staff are like, you can see why), this initially feels a bit like Assault On Precinct 13 in the way it's about some reluctant souls being left to look after a deserted facility. And then the carnage begins.
There is a feeling here that the makers of this film are throwing a little bit of everything at this one - it's at various points a ghost story, there are echoes of a zombie…
No help will come, it's Hoop-Tober 2021!

"What's happening in this hospital?"
Reheated corpses, internal organ liquification, gangrenous bodies and mad doctors; unfortunately the result of all those ingredients doesn't really come together all that well 😐 it does have its glorious gooey moments but besides that it's pretty bland, contrived and drags on too much.
I wouldn't recommend 😑
Infection is like a hospital drama full of ghosts. It starts out well, following the turmoil of a crumbling, cash strapped hospital, along with the quirks and stresses of the miserable, bickering staff, and the plight of the unlucky patients. And when the infection of the title arrives it's an invisible, spreading menace, inhabiting its unwitting, human hosts stealthy like the otherworldly creature in JC's The Thing. At one point I imagined this as a kind of mutated sequel to that film. The Thing: Season of the Witch-style--with the shape-shifting alien making it's way to Japan to inhabit a hospital staff in its newly adopted identity—an infectious disease.
But no...as the horror begins to seep further into the picture it…
This movie is awesome, it stumbles a bit in the second half, but the creepiness and constant escalation make for a terrifying first watch.
Oh boy did I love this! I loved it way more than I ever thought I would! Seeing the low average rating on Letterboxd it seems I’m very much in the minority too!
Take a hospital that sits somewhere uncomfortably between Silent Hill and Fawlty Towers. Add a cast of characters that wouldn’t be out of place in Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. Add some crazy body horror and really strange gore and then ramp the nonsense up to eleven so the whole thing doesn’t make a lick of sense!
I really like how it was shot. Imaginative camerawork, cool angles, and amazing use of the super creepy location.
I loved how isolated the hospital felt. It really did seen like it was…
Not good at all....offers no explainations. Main special effect was green slime everywhere....the most green slime used since the days of The Ghostbusters. Very very disappointing....the cover of the book lied....I want my money back.
Part hospital soap opera.
Part ghost story.
Part infection/zombie film.
Part vomit inducing Japanese gore fest.
Any good? Nah, not really. Any fun? Yeah. Oh, hell yeah.
If you can get past the third rate acting, the ludicrous sub plots and the fact that this film can't decide what it is, doesn't make any sense and doesn't really seem to care, you're in for a treat!
This is a truly amazing J-Horror movie that stands out from the usual ghost affair with some genuinely creative ideas, effective moments of shock and horror, solid performences and expert craftsmenship.
Don't pass on this one if you come across it anywhere. It is a must watch indeed.
