I seem to be in the minority with this chapter. I enjoyed it more than Insidious Chapter 2 and I think it’s a better film.
In this prequel, a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) visits a psychic (Lin Shaye) in hopes of contacting her dead mother, who she believes has been trying to talk to her. Instead, they end up accidentally communicating with a demon searching for a soul. This leads to a lot of tense moments in The Further, an other worldly realm already established in the first two Insidious movies.
Some of the characters are much stronger than those in Insidious Chapter 2, which is shocking to say, considering the original family isn’t even in it. I actually…
Pretty flat overall but there’s some efficiently crafted jump scares that make this fun for some cheap thrills. Also will definitely never get tired of Lin Shaye and the ghostbuster dudes.
eh... didn't really have the feel of an insidious movie and didn't bring enough to the table to be interesting or worthwhile. would have been better as it's own new thing instead of attached to this series
edit: i change my mind, i wish this hadn't been made at all tbh
No matter what happens. No matter what you see. Stay strong.

Murmur... murmur... whisper... murmur... whisper... LOUD FUCKING NOISE! VIOLIN CRESCENDO!
Murmur... murmur... whisper... murmur... whisper... LOUD FUCKING NOISE! VIOLIN CRESCENDO!
Murmur... murmur... whisper... murmur... whisper... LOUD FUCKING NOISE! VIOLIN CRESCENDO!
Repeat to the point of nauseam.
I don't know if I've ever been more annoyed with a film then this. Everyone talks in a barely audible tone forcing you to turn the volume up if you want any hope of understanding it's shitty plot just to set up jump scares with loud fucking noises over and over again.
Also how can a film in 2015 do such a shitty job of hiding when a stunt double is…
"Into The Further we go."
As strange as it sounds, I owe Leigh Whannell and James Wan my life. They created the movie I love more than any other, Saw. Ever since I watched Saw for the first time when I was 12, I basically vowed that I would support these two Australian men in whatever they did. I've seen Insidious countless times, saw The Conjuring first showing, attended an early Insidious Chapter 2 screening, wept my fucking eyes out when I saw the Saw rerelease, and went to go see Furious 7 and was so proud of James Wan despite not seeing any of the other movies in the series. Case in point, I love these men like you…
I'm always hesitant when it comes to prequels. For the most part, I find them to be pointless and honestly a waste of time. That being said, I found another recent horror prequel (a prequel to another James Wan film, none the less), Annabelle, to be a solid retread. Now, I was never really a fan of The Conjuring in the first place, so I was a little more open to the idea of a prequel there. However, I love the original Insidious and while I think it's a little over-the-top, I found Chapter 2 to be enjoyable as well. So I was worried not only about this film to focus on entirely new and unrelated characters, but also because…
I love Lin Shaye! I have loved her since the original A Nightmare on Elm Street and think she is awesome in every single thing she does. I could probably watch an hour and a half of her knitting a scarf and be perfectly content because she’s just. that. awesome.
So, naturally a sequel that thrusts her supporting character (of the previous installments) to the front and center is going to be pretty good by me. However, if she wasn’t in this, I’m not sure I’d like it at all. This movie takes place before the events of the first two and follows Elise on her quest to release a girl from the clutches of an evil spirit. The most…
"Oh my god no." - Sean,
Good to see Lin Shaye kicking some demon ass.
A girl starts getting haunted and then BLAH BLAH BLAH it's not that good. This is a prequel so that they could have an excuse to bring horror icon Lin Shaye back to the series and she is definitely the highlight of the film. It's an efficient horror origin story with little to offer beyond that. The franchise is seemingly not my thing but I think I may actually enjoy this chapter more than the first two which just don't connect for me at all. The sound design is good and in general I just found the jump scares in this installment to work better.
Not a recommend.
