It's probably a bad sign when the behind-the-scenes documentary is more consistently entertaining than the movie, right?
I loved how much time was spent focusing on the animators who work long hours to bring everything to life! This is shockingly honest and in-depth. Some of it, I’m genuinely blown away that Disney would willingly show in a public forum. The fact that the entire creative team had no idea what “Show Yourself” would be about until the back half of production? Insane. I was shouting at my screen begging someone in the group to just take charge.
In a multitude of ways, this gave me loads of appreciation for the amount of work and artistry and passion that goes into every animated film, whether it’s a great one or not. In other ways, this is, like, a crazy case…

Ok I'm being hyperbolic, but wow holy moly is this bleak, and fascinating, and should be required viewing for anybody who wants to get into not only animation, but moviemaking in general. It is INSANE that Disney not only lets people see this, but puts it on the front page of their streaming service.

I went into this expecting it to be contrived, sanitized corporate propaganda as Disney’s supplementary material tends to be.... but as it turns out, this was refreshingly candid and human!! hardly just a polished advertisement for the animation studio, it isn’t afraid to document the challenges, failures, and frustrations of the project. for the first time, I feel like I’ve been granted somewhat *real* access into what it’s like to work at Disney, and I was totally enamored by this glimpse into the production process.

This is truly the first GREAT piece of original media released to Disney Plus; it's consistently compelling and interesting, and lacks the lows of TCW while achieving higher highs than Mando or any other original. It blows the Star Wars Gallery shlock OUT OF THE WATER. Where the Mando BTS feels grossly manufactured, this is personal and intimate and genuinely exhilarating.

Something so gratifying about the fact that Show Yourself was the most difficult part of the film to finalize and it ended up being the single greatest moment in cinematic history. Crazy right?
Into the Unknown: The Making of Frozen II is an extremely interesting and engaging docu series that gives you the inside look into what it takes to create an animated movie. The series focuses on the difficult, tedious, and long journey this film’s production had. With constant rewrites, scrapped songs, and scrapped shots (an animator will work on one shot for a week and then when a rewrite happens they get rid of it) its incredible there is even a final product. Watching this series has given me a greater appreciation for animated films as it gave me such deep insight into the people behind them.
Plus, getting to watch an orchestra recording session of the best song in the film during the final episode is reason enough to watch this series.
I was iffy on watching this, mainly because I was not the biggest fan of Frozen II. But after some convincing, it became clear that as a film lover, I need to see how all kinds are made, even if I do not love every single one I see. And I am so glad I did because this a fantastic documentary.
It is not hard to trash on Disney. They make so much content, and when they make something that is mediocre, it is easy to say that they made it for a quick buck.
