There’s so much to love here. The cast, the music, the dogfight footage, and (my personal favorite) the Cessna vs dirt bike drag race.
It has the problematic hallmarks of Regan-era politics, but also manages some cool stunt work and one of the greatest theme songs of the decade (though why it doesn’t play until the “oops we almost forgot the end credits” end credits is beyond me).
My biggest complaint is that star Jason Gedrick isn’t just a bad actor, he’s not believable as a carbon-based lifeform. Think Jai Courtney if someone slowed him down to half speed and uppercut his chin before every line of dialogue.
Other movies would do this premise better and with more substantial drama (The Rescue 88) but the shagginess of this is 80s charming and I’ll be damned if Lou Gossett Jr doesn’t slay all day in this thing.
Never say die! Iron Eagle!
