wish I remembered who told me this *wasn't* terrifying so that I could hit them up for all my new therapy bills & anti-depressants.

Two sides of the Hollywood distribution coin: It Comes at Night is anticipated (and marketed) as an antidote to the plodding monotony of typical Summer fare, only to reveal itself (in 2,533 theatres nationwide, no less) as a lame, counter-intuitive example of the inherent flaws of the modern low-budget Art-House picture. The film, directed by Trey Edward Shults, is Romero without the implications of exploitation, Kubrick without formal satisfaction of its displays of dread, Carpenter without any genuine exploration of its ensemble. It reeks of shambled ideas, overambitious attempts at ambiguity, and overcooked viewpoints of performers. It Comes at Night creates and molds a world of its own even when the parts and pieces are woefully self-important and deceitful.…
I don't see how this is demonstrably different from the weekly tediously self-conscious bleakness of your average episode of "The Walking Dead", except this has the added benefit of looking like every other generic indie horror movie from the last 5+ years.
The two dudes next to me both took their shoes off and put their disgusting feet up. That was the moment I understood what the title meant.
someone in the theater just yelled "aw come on, that was a piece of shit" and the girl next to me just said "i feel dumb, i don't get it".
this is creepy as hell. spooky stuff. great cinematography. great score. story definitely needed some work though, i wish it was longer!
Misleadingly marketed as a horror, It Comes At Night is instead a powerful, beautifully acted family drama with elements of mystery and psychological thriller. The masterful sophomore feature from Krisha writer-director Trey Edward Shults is a gripping, atmospheric and touching in equal amounts minimalist post-apocalyptic survival tale with utmost respect for its story, characters and us, viewers.
This is the type of film that will either rattle your cage or leave you bored. Luckily for me it was the first.
When expecting a straight up horror film, you'll end up disappointed. Shults' film is so much more than that. It's a horrific study of our species' character when faced with a threat to its habitat and natural order.
Shults gives us a family trying to deal with an invisible threat that lurks outside their cabin. It is never really explained what it is, but it appears to be some sort of virus, unrelenting and ever present. Inside the cabin, the family of three has created a bubble of apparent structure. It serves as a coping mechanism, an…
I'm almost shaking from the devastating ambiguity and horrifying actions that happened in the finale.
This is how you make a horror film.
Thank you.
I didn't think A24 could make a better (although slightly less atmospheric) horror movie than The Witch... but consider it done.
I need to see this again.
If "It Comes At Night" is what modern audiences consider to be SLOW, then god help them all.
