Lone Scherfig makes the very best of the Dogme 95 restrictions with Italian for Beginners, using the tenets of the famous manifesto to bring additional focus on the performances, as originally intended. Some properly laugh out loud moments had me wondering if Anders Thomas Jensen hadn't had a hand in the script, so similar is the humour to many of his films. A story that might well have seemed slight in other hands comes off as immensely sweet in Scherfig's, making this a consummate encapsulation of isolation and loneliness in the modern world. I smiled so very much; Italian for Beginners is a brilliantly acted and written comedy with a strong undercurrent of humanity.

I wish my Italian lessons were like this

This was a good introduction to the Dogme 95 movement. I like other Lone Scherfig films that I've seen, so here's another reason for me to like her and her filmography. The film itself was fine. Nothing amazing, but it was a nice watch.

A delightful dramedy that succeeds through the intricacies of its characterization and dedication to the spareness of its storytelling. - ▲

So bizarre, but it got around to charming me. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in Italian and Italian classes, e.g. @samsto.

Didn't finish but in class, more than HALF of the students walked out of this so that's something.

Also, Dogme 95 is not chief!!

Week 50 - Movement - Dogme 95 (1995-2005)

I was drawn to Italian for Beginners out of all the Dogme films, as it seems to be one that would have a more comedic tone. However, it is rarely funny, and there are some darker moments whenever the parents appear. Despite this, it does have a charm to the main characters' interactions. Perhaps because of its style, it requires some patience as it can feel plodding at times.

Uma combinação de leveza e rigor, neste caso, dá a esse filme uma despretenção admirável que evita a previsibilidade e o estereótipo. E consegue algo raro: ser um retrato humano sobre o romance moderno; espalhar sentimentos de felicidade quando nasceu da solidão.

I wish my Italian lessons were like this

I'm not entirely sure what this movie was going for. Part of the Lars Von Trier family of Dogme films, this has no tone. It's by turns uncomfortable to watch and sad, though somehow without making me care about any of the characters. On the other hand, there are some truly bizarre moments that were interesting. Still, I could have done without it.

Morbid but strangely wholesome, this movie has three deaths and just as many funerals but manages to find the off-kilter humor in sadness - the trick is to have the sadness be shared, and showing where it comes out.

Anyway, I sat with a big dumb grin for most of the running time, when not laughing out loud. One of the sweetest films ever.

Dogme 95 moonstruck? Didn’t know I needed this but it’s kind of a perfect movie.

That were some weird ass people. But definetly funny at times.

Jeg havde egentlig planer om se noget anden, men kom til at zappe rundt i tossekassen og faldt over den her.
Tænk at det er noget der forsvinder, da den måde vi ser ting på, er ved at ændre sig markant, grundet streaming.
Nå, Danmarks Radio har lige sendt en dokumentar om Dogme95 bevægelsen (Idioterne der startede festen) og jeg fik lyst til at gense den her.
Sidst jeg så den var i øvrigt i biografen.
Det er en film med karakterer der ikke er gode til særligt meget, men har mod på livet og på den måde gør det dem til ægte mennesker.
Jeg husker filmen som sjov, men ikke så sjov som jeg synes den er nu. Den tager nogle komiske drejninger jeg ikke havde set.
Det er en virkelig god film!
