Synopsis
It would have been a lovely family dinner. If it weren't the last.

i really can't complain too much about a movie that has lea seydoux dancing to the numa numa song in dolphin shorts
me, giving you a tour of my house that resides up xavier dolan's ass: hi mtv welcome to my crib
Less of a journey/more compact Dolan but just as compelling as the rest of his filmography; a powerful investigation of familial dysfunction and the inability to communicate in the face of stressful or foreign situations. With that being said, I'm honestly surprised that this family didn't start chopping up and cannabilizing one another. MVP: Vincent Cassel.

Congrats to Xavier Dolan, who at 27 has already reached the "let's look back fondly on his older work" stage of his career.
How Xavier Dolan wrote the dialogue:

I'm very divided. On the one hand, the actors' performances are impeccable with Lea Seydoux being my favorite. I also liked the way the film was shot. Lots of close-ups and long scenes. All this has a very claustrophobic, depressing effect. Bold music choices too, which mostly worked.
On the other hand, the film as a whole is not really bearable. A lot of shouting, interrupting, stuttering, tons of incomplete sentences and a main character who doesn't get a word out and has already annoyed me after the first half. Where does the film ultimately lead to? I’m not really sure. All I know is it's been a very exhausting 98 minutes full of outstanding performances by a great cast.
This is only the second foreign film that I've seen, actually I shouldn't call it foreign since it was filmed literally about two hours from where I live, but it's in another language.
The first film I've seen by Xavier Dolan, and you can immediately tell that he is an amazing director. The cinematography was great, the characters were all very well developed, but I think that some scenes dragged on for a very long time. Other than that i thought the film was very well made and very well acted, though it was hard to keep up with the subtitles, I found myself very attentive when it came to the very fast paced french conversations.
Looking forward to more of Xavier Dolan's work.
