So good. It goes down like cotton candy. Lester takes the standard format of jukebox musicals from the 50s and mocks almost everything about them. He fills it to the brim with fourth-wall-breaks, inventive editing, and expressive photography. Having seen a number of Sam Katzman's takes in this sort of film, it's quite refreshing to see somebody realize that nobody is watching these movies for the plot, it's to see the songs.
Even though the performers here are lip-synching to pre-recorded material, it is marvelous to see them in an approximation of what they would've been like on stage. Gene Vincent, Gary US Bonds, and Chubby Checker are all having an absolute ball in their respective sequences.
It's astonishing how formed Lester's sensibilities were on his first feature.
