Jack Kerouac will certainly go down as a man who embodied the word 'American'. In both his writing and his life, he lived free. Free to make decisions whether good or bad, and free to seek new experiences. There is something very noble about that.
Jack Kerouac: King of the Beats tries to encompass that statement. Personally, I think it falls a little short. The documentary is over-stuffed with reenactments with actors playing Kerouac. I fully understand the fact that there just isn't a lot of footage of Jack. But I find that the mixing of images skews the viewer's reality of the subject.
The documentary also comes off as very museum-ish. Where carpeted walls and cold benches await you. But nevertheless, a fascinated look at a man seeking the 'American Dream'.
