It is 1991 in Latvia and nineteen-year-old aspiring cinematographer Jazis’s whole world is thrown into chaos as he is dragged into the people’s peaceful protests against the Soviet Army’s attempted takeover of power in his country.

Man nav skaidrs, vai Jazis filmas gaitā vispār kaut ko iemācījās. Personīgo likmju viņam nav daudz – filmēšana ir tikai "muļķīgs sapnis", krievu armija liekas ok izvēle, iet uz barikādēm nav jēgas, pat attiecības viņš iegūst tikai meitenes uzņēmības dēļ. Vienīgais, kas viņu kaut cik interesē, ir Podnieka viedoklis par viņa izcilo kinematogrāfista veikumu (un arī līdz Podniekam viņš tiek tikai Annas dēļ). Kad izrādās, ka tas nav nemaz tik izcils, Jazis apvainojas un kļūst extra riebīgs pret apkārtējiem. Tātad viņa lielais panākums ir tas, ka viņš pārdzīvoja aizvainojumu, paņēma kameru un gāja filmēt barikādes? Baigais jau nu varoņa ceļš, kurā varonis pats teju neko neizdara, bet saņem visus atalgojumus (meiteni un mentora atzinību, kā jebkurā klasiskā varoņstāstā pienākas).
Ja Jazis būtu nevis visu dienu bezjēgā skatījies kaut kādus tur Bergmanus, bet gan dabūjis no Dumbura pieņemsim Šantalu Akermani, tad varbūt Podnieka komentārs par ainavu, kurā nekas nenotiek, nebūtu tā iedzēlis, un čuvaks turpinātu strādāt pareizajā virzienā. Turklāt šeit Podnieks vēl izskatījās pēc ļoti neuzticama lietuviešu crooka, tā kā nebija vērts pārdzīvot.

Well made and not without purpose or thematic intent, but I think I'm over this sub-genre of coming of age drama (the one where aimless teenage boys decide they want to become filmmakers against a vaguely political backdrop that does more to obfuscate the narrative than add to it).
Still, I can't deny that there was an intangible quality that kept me pulled in through to the end. The way this film is shot does it a lot of favors, and even if the characters are written to be as annoying as possible while still retaining the bare minimum of likeability, the actors all do a commendable job bringing them to life. I can see myself checking out another one of this filmmaker's projects. He at least knows how to utilize aesthetic to tell a story.

i abandoned my two mates in Riga to go watch this film in the Splendid Palace, Riga's 100 year old independent cinema. watching a film in Riga, about Riga, filmed in Riga, by a Rigan filmaker, surrounded by Rigan citizens. was pretty cool.
the film was a tad aimless but i just loves the experience so much.

Technically brilliant but sorely lacking in story. A romance is introduced and I thought finally, something narratively to focus on, but it was short lived. Great soundtrack though!

Typical Eastern European Communists vs. Fascists coming-of-age love story clearly (at least, I can only assume) based on the director's youthful experiences of first love, first rage and budding cinephilia.
The protagonist's film obsession is palpable though he doesn't plan on doing it professionally as it is a pipe dream but then he meets Anna, an equally punky and plucky fellow film obsessive who becomes his first love.
Honestly, while a lot of the cliche boxes of this kind of movie ARE indeed ticked,it also does a lot of things in it's own unique way as well!
