Hercules is told point blank not to take anything on the island or Talos will come and fuck them up, then is surprised when he takes something and Talos comes to fucks them up. He’s lovable, but not that smart.

So for some reason I spent the entire time watching this thinking it was made in the 80s. I was sitting there thinking how shit the effects were considering the year. I went to rate it and discovered it was made in 1963. “What wonderful special effects” I then backpedalingly exclaimed. Jason and the Argonauts is basically like an older version of the older version of Clash of the Titans. There is a lot of stop-motion effects and superimpositions of people made to look big amongst smaller people. That’s all it is really.

In the era where epic films seems to be at the top of the order -especially those regarding the Rome era-, this is perhaps the most ambitious but also the most boring. The fact I kept confusing this movie with another (read: Clash of the Titans) that came years after and neither the OG nor the remakre are precisely good, thats not what I would call a good sign.
That's not to say everything here sucks. Starting up, the performances are not all time bad, but when they do there's something just hysterical about the theatricality and odd pauses. Also the very outdated visual effects (from the practical camera tricks to the stop motion) has a charm of its own…

I recall being wowed by the many fantastical creatures to be found in this film! I was a kid for crying outloud, it didn't matter that the script was poor, the dubbing was atrocious! And the actors couldn't act their way out of a paper bag! All that ever mattered to me was the monsters and boy oh boy did I get my fill thanks to the king of stop motion Ray Harryhausen!
I just finished my first viewing of the film as an adult and it's still "all about the monsters!" Ray Harryhausen is my hero!
It struck me towards the end of this master piece how visual effects legend Ray Harryhausen lulls you into proceedings. Beginning with the statuesque Talos, a slow moving almost lumbering giant cast out of bronze. Then we have a couple of Harpies, more complex in their movements especially when in flight.
The Clashing Rocks are the calm before the storm so to speak because soon after the shit really does hit the stop motion fan with the multi headed snake like Hydra before the pièce de résistance head fuck of the "children of the Hydra's teeth" - seven sword and shield wielding skeletons. The stop motion animation work that went into them must have been obscene.
Stunning stuff. The rest of the movie pales in comparison.
if i was being attacked by a giant iron statue, screaming harpies, a hydra, or a group of skeletons with swords i would simply let them kill me in an extremely cool way and say thank you for the privilege of being your murder victim
As a kid, this was one of my favourite films. Action packed, intriguing faraway lands, monsters, an eerie score and 'The Gods'. This was the stuff of childhood legend, as brave men travelled to the ends of the earth in search of retribution.
Watching it today was a different experience, but it held many of the same memories. I guess I have more of an appreciation of the film's age now, and was more aware of the visual effect styling and paper thin props so it felt like more of a technical experience. Putting that aside though, the story stands up well.

As much as I love Jason And The Argonauts, even I have to admit that the swordsmanship on show here is absolutely awful.
Until the skeleton fight, barely anybody hits their target in the entire film, save for a lucky stab on the Hydra. Otherwise I wouldn't be expecting these lads to be troubling the medal podium at the Olympics. Also, here's hoping that Triton stuck some Lynx on before he helped them past the Clashing Rocks because any B.O. on a bloke that size is going to do more damage than some falling boulders.

I was a Percy Jackson kid so even a spotty plot, slow in the middle film is gonna appeal to me if you put some Greek rando in a position to prove something to the gods. I’ll eat that shit up every time.
Add in the special effects by maestro Ray Harryhausen and you can forget it, it’s a smash. Not only was I a Percy Jackson kid, I also made stop-motion Bionicle movies on my VHS camera, so I really understand the hardship Harryhausen went through on a personal level.
It’s an epic hero’s journey, that can’t quite ramp up its excitement with each task in the world quest, but it’s features some of the most amazing visual effects that work extremely effectively in tandem with the actors.
