I wonder what happened with Lydia and Jamie...
Garlin improv-driven, random infused comedy special is a nice revisit into some of the wildest moments in the comedians' 37 years career with very uneven results.
On the bright side, there are some nice moments and it got me chuckling a few times. There are some nice stories that are pretty entertaining. And its very intimate approach to the special was very nice.
Unfortunately many of the topics he touches on have been done better by others. The whole Donnut story was pretty weak and couldn't stop thinking about Jim Gaffigan making the audience laugh their guts out.
If you are down for some standup and you have seriously nothing to watch, you could give it a try to this one,
I get the appeal of Garlin’s rambling improv-adjacent stand-up but I just can’t help but wish he was a little more structured and coherent. There are laughs to be had here but it feels far more like a pleasant podcast than a real stand-up set.
It’s not a good sign that the set’s best, funniest moment is a plea from Garlin to watch John Mulaney material instead of his own. He’s right.
I've heard this guy described as a "reliable unsung hero of stand-up comedy", well given that he's celebrating his 37th year as a stand-up and I'd never even heard of him, he must be doing something wrong? I Googled him and it listed off a slew of American Television shows that I'd also never heard of, and a couple that I'd never had any interest in. Now I don't know everything and everyone, but I'm fairly well up on comedians, even lame American ones like this dude, but this was at times painful to watch. Usually these specials have plenty of fans in the audience, but besides the awkward couple who he brought into his act, the laughs weren't exactly…
If you don’t end your comedy special by telling the audience they should actually be watching John Mulaney instead... I don’t know what to tell you. It’s 2019, folks. Get with the program.

Much joy and giggling acquired. One of the most reliable unsung heroes of comedy to get me to laugh. Loved his crowd interraction and ability to weave it into the narrative. I want to believe it wasn't previously rehearsed but even if it was it still managed to be delightful. Probably not for all comedic sensibilities, but I sure loved it.
A pretty funny stand up special. I've always enjoyed Jeff Garlin and he delivers the laughs here.
I wasnt actually a huge fan of this one, but Jeff still ended up getting some laughs out of me. In terms of being a stand up comedy, I'd probably give it a 6, but I usually dont score this stuff so I'll just leave it at that.
So go watch John Mulaney if you haven't. If you have, watch it again. Why not? You know, it's enjoyable.
Film #53 of my 2019 Netflix Originals Initiative.
*****
Garlin is pretty funny here as he supplements his stand-up material with measured improvisations. It's a pretty raw, yet openly honest performance. He opens up in a very honest manner and reveals some painful moments as well as healing ones to the audience. It's funny and sobering at points as well.
Well worth a watch.
Didn't really work for me, but Jeff seems like he's doing pretty well - looks great, good energy, never loses focus. I don't know. I just didn't hear too many jokes, and when I did, I didn't laugh at them?
Watched on Netflix. Bonus star for a very handsome suit.
I take it that most audiences haven’t heard of Jeff Garlin. At best, they may know him from Larry David’s mesmerising Curb Your Enthusiasm perfection. Perhaps a few know him from Wall-e as the voice of the Captain. Regardless of where, how, or why you know this man, I bet you didn’t know he did stand-up comedy. Jeff Garlin: Our Man in Chicago released to a miserably silent reception, and having now watched this stand-up set, it’s easy to see why that is. A stand-up special devoid of comedy, that’s what we should come to expect the more Netflix begin to offer us.
Garlin is a certainly funny guy, that much is clear off of his various film and television…
this was okay (which is better than meh, for reference)
his giggle and his voice make it, as always
So go watch John Mulaney if you haven't. If you have, watch it again. Why not? You know, it's enjoyable.
stand up makes me happy and laughing really helped me tonight
jeff has a really nice take on comedy, you can tell he loves the art
