  I'm a sucker for little throwaway mystery/thrillers like Jennifer 8, where A-list talent decides to slum it. The story, about a police detective (Andy Garcia) falling for a blind girl (Uma Thurman) who may or may not be the next target of a serial killer, is not anything special, as it introduces a multitude of characters who are far less concerned with being integrated into the story as they are in announcing their functional roles; Lance Henriksen goes way over the top playing the typical friend/mentor.   Boring creepy cop sleeps with a post-traumatic witness. Very little procedural plotting, a whole lot of whining and angry talking and just... I dunno, it had a good twist toward the very end.

  It started off with an interesting premise and it seemed like it was going to check the boxes for a fun 90s thriller but as it progressed Jennifer 8 started to feel lifeless and dull. Andy Garcia and Lance Henriksen are very good and the dialogue is witty at times. I was really grooving with the first half of the movie but then not so much with the second half. It’s about a serial killer but you never see any murder, it takes itself totally seriously void of any cheese, and the final unmasking is underwhelming. Also the movie portrays Uma’s blind character as completely helpless and not very interesting.

  There are films that you'll watch over the years that actually pale into insignificance when you end up reading about the behind the scenes problems of bringing it to the screen. Bruce Robinson's Jennifer Eight is one such movie, a generic mystery thriller that gets bogged down in trying to be too clever for it's own good, it was a box office flop despite an impressive cast that included Andy Garcia, Lance Henriksen, Uma Thurman, John Malkovich, and the production problems essentially broke director Robinson's spirit.   Unfortunately dull American giallo/early '90s serial killer procedural that actually sports an admirably ludicrous Argento-esque premise (a black-gloved, whispering killer uses his blade to slice up helpless blind girls). Uma Thurman is his eighth potential victim, the beautiful Jennifer whom Andy Garcia's obsessed, heartbroken cop falls in love with. There's a bunch of stylish/character stuff to enjoy: Conrad Hall's moody cinematography, composer Chris Young's trademark strings and piano, the precipitation heavy pre-SEVEN ambiance that dominates every scene (and eventually gives way to stark, snowy night shooting), Lance Henriksen's plainspoken partner who calls everyone "bro" and will follow Garcia's dumb-dumb into oblivion.   Trotz einer hochkarätigen Besetzung und einer soliden Inszenierung, die vollumfänglich den Charme der 90er Jahre Thriller wiedergibt, bleibt Jennifer Eight ein unterdurchschnittliches Filmchen. Die stark konstruierte Geschichte und die klischeehaften Figuren können auch nicht von dem Cast gerettet werden. Da gab es in den 90ern wirklich bessere Thriller, die eher einen Rewatch rechtfertigen.

  Even at their poorest and more perfunctory, I fucking love 90's dark murder mystery shadows-on-the-stairway, grim discovery crime thrillers.
  Most crime thrillers work better when shot on 35mm because they feel like parts of the case. They themselves are an archival truth to the whole of the unravelling. Like wiping off a steamed window with a sock. The picture still not sharp but navigation is possible.
