2003 ‘呪怨2’ Directed by Takashi Shimizu
While driving, the pregnant horror-movie actress Kyôko Harase and her fiancé are in a car crash. She loses her baby and her fiancé winds up in a coma. Kyôko was cursed together with a television crew when they shot a show in the haunted house where Kayako was brutally murdered by her husband years ago. While each member of the team dies or disappears, Kyôko is informed that she has a three-and-a-half-month-old fetus in her womb.

less quiet dread more harsh malevolence wall. i love kayako in the first movie partly because of how almost bewildered and curious she looks rather than mean or violent. the original remake removes some of the key facial expressions that communicate that almost-kindness, but that softened tragic quality is totally absent here, gone neutral impassive face of doom. everywhere, implacable, so profoundly sad because inevitable. you can see that knowing on toshio's face.

What is the weight of a stain? Like a glass of tea spilled, anger and grief ripple through the between-ness of spacetime, running down and through and in its uneven surfaces, collecting here, pooling here, running off edges. 'Ju-on: The Grudge 2' takes as its subject a reality show involved in re-enacting and exploring the haunted events and house of 'Ju-On: The Grudge'. The more Ju-on movies I watch, the more I believe that they are all the same. Ju-on: The Grudge 2 is the fourth film in the franchise (excluding the shorts), and I am already beyond tired of the formula. The filmmakers continue to introduce us to disposable characters who are impossible to care about in chapter-like form. The lore is not expanded in a way to make us feel for the vengeful spirits either. Even worse, the aesthetic is losing its tiny bit of charm. Nothing is interesting, nor is anything particularly scary.

I took a similar journey a few years ago. I intended to watch all of the Ju-Ons starting with the 90's shorts but I only made it this far. Even though it should be in my recent memory, I mixed up a lot of details. Understandable because of the segmented nature of the films. THIS is the best Ju-On, not the first theatrical.
Let's start with the cover. Not the one chosen for Letterboxd but the DVD cover. Almost minimalist Kabuki inspired work of art. Director Takashi Shimizu turns up the creep factor in Ju-on 2 to warp 8! He certainly has proven he has what it takes to create and maintain a menacing atmosphere! In my opinion his only downfall is his continued use of a non linear format! It doesn't do anything but create a befuddling storyline that at times is difficult to follow!
We get increased dosages of the Kayako and Toshio which tickled me pink! Kayako gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "Let Your Hair Down" Only when she does it you better run for your life!
This movie felt like such a slog to get through even though there is a consistent amount of scary scenes. I think it's because it's so hard to make a little boy in white makeup look menacing. There's even a scene in this where he's just squatting outside in broad daylight. It's so strange to see and there was never a moment where it was really scary. The directing isn't the worst, but it's just not scary or interesting at all.
Same house with the same ghost kid and mother with hair that has a “life” if it’s own, this time a documentary team showcasing the paranormal site are all cursed like those from the first movie. The curse? You die.
Don’t get me wrong here. The monster ghosts of The Grudge are about as creepy as monsters get. I just don’t think there is enough material here to make for a memorable sequel. The mystery of the pregnant woman - I love those “what exactly is going to spring out of her” moments in horror - was intriguing, and my favorite scene is the schoolgirl Chiharu’s out-of-body experience.
There just isn’t much new or unexpected here. Still, if you’re a fan of the original this is a pretty good continuation of the story.
Day 25. Watch any movie from the Ju-On franchise (aka The Grudge). Yes, if you want to watch the remakes that's ok too.
I did once see a little boy run through my bedroom, but I was under the influence of a legal high. I must say if that wee boy was causing problems for me like this one, I'd be finding a way to get a hold of him and spank his wee white powdered botty, and his mammy could do with a haircut. Grab the hair clippers its your only help! Slug hair don't care.
Being a mammy can be thankless, pick up their jotter yet get pushed down the stairs. No rest til yer dead.

ju-on: the grudge 2 is still as creepy as the first one, actually, i think it's still even more– mainly because of the very beginning and what happens next; i sort of thought Toshio as a quiet ghost but oh boy how wrong was i??? there were so many disturbing scenes/jumpscares-ish that truly made me want to peel my skin off. the entire plot just made me want to gouge my eyes out (not in its literal sense, of course). i was so scared after watching ju-on: the grudge (the first one), i legit believed that the sequel (this film) wouldn't be as distressing, however, to my surprise it actually was like 100 times more. truly bone-chilling (in my opinion), I was so petrified and still am if i can be honest. it's the kind of film that stays with you forever!
