  Zellweger does her best. Still, I became convinced that I need a break from biopics that focus exclusively on the miserable final months of great artists, with occasional flashbacks to the “glory days” that reveal how they never were all that glorious. Also: I declare a moratorium on biographical films that end with the great hero getting a standing ovation from an adoring public that did not appreciate them in their lifetime. Please, I beg of you, no more. I cannot take it.

  it brings me no pleasure to say this because it's clear that renée is trying very hard but literally every single thing this wants to be about (including garland's professional downward spiral and the way she wrestled with her own experiences of abuse & history of addiction/self-destruction) was done better by the real garland herself in A Star is Born (1954).

  Judy Garland: "They hound people in this world. Anybody who's different. They can't stand it. Well, to hell with them."

  Sometimes an entire movie boils down to a lead performance, and Judy is one of those examples. Fortunately, Renee Zellweger is more than up to the challenge. Zellweger does more than just an imitation here - sure, the ticks and mannerisms that have been copied and parodied for decades are all on display, but, the actress goes for, and largely, attains several more layers.

  "Judy, don't you dare."

  Judy was cursed by a horrible trailer, but might fare okay from word of mouth. Renée Zellweger was away for some time, but now it seems like she's back. Unlike Marion Cotillard's miraculous transformation into Edith Piaf, Zellweger's look as Judy Garland is great thanks to the makeup department. However, she never really sounds like Judy. 

  The story is disturbing and touching, as we witness her unhealthy drug and alcohol addiction and her fight to keep custody of her kids. 

  There are several flashbacks to her Wizard of Oz years when young Judy (Darci Shaw) experiences various abuses from studio heads and workers. Shaw unfortunately looked nothing like Judy Garland and it was one of those…
