  Kalev - even with its flaws, simply *amazing*. if you told me that a writing team of Mehis Pihla, Ove Musting (neither of whom have written a feature before), and Martin Algus (who has written some films that i *hate* with a burning passion) would be able to pack so much political intrigue, wonderful characters, great humor, and thrilling basketball scenes into 91 minutes… i wouldn’t fucking believe you. yet they do. yes, it isn’t perfect (every line of the annoyingly exposition-filled commentator voice-over is trash and should be cut & some characters deserved *a few* more moments and minutes of screen time, especially after the climax), but what a wonderful cinematic experience this is. Rein Kotov’s cinematography is sensational, the film sounds incredible & everyone from the cast brings their a-game. crowds will love. a film this good, especially an Estonian one, deserves to be seen on the big screen.

  our Best International Feature submission this year and i don't mind it. i'm a bit too young to remember the actual story, but i'm old enough to know most of the players portrayed. very cool story, very cool movie, very cool to see this in a packed cinema. very cool cool cool.

  fun fact: the only black player was played by an actual basketball player (former mvp of our domestic league) who is a basketball coach now here in Estonia. very cool guy and also a frequent cinema goer.

  This Estonian movie doesn’t present anything new as a historic Sports Drama, nor is the basketball court choreography sparkling -
  & while my interest & its strength is the geopolitical of that (Soviet) era, it’s definitely not a pulse-racer.

  Confident direction & excellent acting.
