People were surprised Guy Ritchie’s THE COVENANT wasn’t what it was advertised as. KANDAHAR is the movie you thought COVENANT was…..And Yet, the interrogation of multinational proxy war in Afghanistan that Ritchie avoids is faced Head-On by Waugh & co. Smarter than you think.
That said, this is still an Airport novel action programmer at the end of the day, but it is unafraid to dive into the morass of Post-GWOT geopolitics, trading the ambiguous “slavic regions” of 80s Cold War movies…

Egal was ich nun gleich über das neueste Gerald Butler Vehikel verzapfen werde, die schönen Wüstenaufnahmen mit ihren Bildern von Sandmeeren und bizarren Felsformationen haben mich auf jeden Fall beeindruckt. Ich habe gelesen, dass der Film in Saudi-Arabien gedreht wurde, und zumindest was die landschaftliche Schönheit angeht, kann der irdische Wüstenstaat mit Arrakis mehr als mithalten.
Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht der CIA-Agent Tom Harris (Gerard Butler), der mit der Sabotage von Atomanlagen im Iran beauftragt wird. Als die Dinge für ihn schief laufen, müssen er und sein afghanischer Übersetzer nach Kandahar fliehen, um das rettende Fluchtflugzeug rechtzeitig zu erwischen.
"Kandahar" fängt zu langsam an, sucht verzweifelt nach Tiefgang und will scheinbar kein reiner Actionfilm sein. Am Ende…

Was gonna joke about how this and The Covenant are basically the same film, only to see others already make that comparison. To be fair there are some differences; The Covenant is set during the US occupation of Afghanisatin, Kandahar is set after. They're both pretty bleak looks at the country, but the former was more about the futility of America's occupation, whereas the latter is more about how it's all gotten worse since the US left.
They are however undeniably very similar films, and unfortunately for this film the comparisons to The Covenant aren't terribly favourable. In both films it's about the relationship between the main lead and his native interpreter, but where this is strong in The Covenant,…

Kandahar doesn't compare to Extraction 2, but it's still worth seeing, because it offers action you haven't seen. Like fighting a chopper in the desert at night with an AK and NV goggles.
That's one of your most important tasks when writing an action movie: to offer at least a few fresh sequences for the audience to experience!
If I had a nickel for every time, Gerald Butler fights his way through a foreign country for survival in a 2023 actioner, with a male POC sidekick, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Passable, but ultimately unspectacular. Kandahar goes through the motions, and Butler is capable as always. There's a cool night-vision set piece, at least!

Marked by excellent cinematography, a solid international cast, and a mature take on US foreign policy, my main man Gerry B returns to the big screen in Kandahar, a thoughtful and suspenseful politico-bellum slow-burn thriller about a deep-cover MI-6 agent (Butts) and his Afghan interpreter (Navid Negahban) caught deep behind enemy lines as they attempt to escape from multiple different factions to the titular city so our favorite Scotsman can return home in time for his daughter's graduation.
Look I make no bones about my affection for Gerard Butler. I much pretty love everything the guy does and even his crap movies like Geostorm at least have GButts…

I know I'm not saying anything original when comparing this to The Covenant, but you really can't help it. And that comparison does this film exactly ZERO favors.
Literally everything is just a little weaker. The acting, the direction, the special effects, the action: nothing is improved. Maybe I'm coming in a half-star low here, but the biggest* problem is I honestly got a little bored by the end. Not a great sign for an action thriller.

I knew almost nothing about this movie going in... I figured it was going to be just another war in the Middle East flick. But when I realized that was Gerard Butler under that beard, I quickly re-oriented my thinking. This was going to be another one of his upjumped B movies, right? Wrong... it's an overstuffed but serious action/drama.
Butler plays a CIA spook on a mission to destabilize Iran's nuclear program when he's burned. With his face known to all, he has to get out of the region before an array of spies and counter-spies catch up to him.
It's a movie about an American and his local translator crossing the desert while being hunted by hostile forces.…
