  It’s practically a crime that Baumbach was allowed to keep making movies after making something about pretentious 20 year old men who happen to be pretty redeemable.  But what does that say about him as a writer! As a senior film major with an unpredictable future who just made a video using philosophy to talk about Spongebob, I really did enjoy the hell out of this.

  i love how jane becomes an absent-present symbol in this film, of both the past and the future. she haunts grover (in his mind and on the answering machine), but she's also the only one who is able to move on after graduation. she's already her own person.

  meanwhile... the others flounder:

  "i think i made a wise decision with these slacks tonight"
  "i hope you don't mind that i took my shirt off"
  "you can always go tomorrow"

  and i love how nobody's teeth are perfect, like normal people.

  finally, i am left imagining "grover + jane" as an old couple, delighted in their surprise kisses.

  which makes me happy.

  This is pretty much my life right now. No, not hooking up with Parker Posey, but the post-graduating living with your parents, jerking off every day, being unemployed, and getting drunk as much as possible hits so close to home. Also, it's really funny. I'm not sure how I'm going to go back to Rohmer for my talky sad comedies when Chris Eigeman isn't there.

  I've seen this a bunch of times and yet it is always a super slow starter. Takes like half an hour to get off the ground, is almost permanently hobbled by an awful opening scene. But by the end it always wins me over. Something about the flashback in the bar with Grover and Jane where we finally understand her appeal, and Chet's wisdom, and how much of the Grover character we've seen has been affectation, it's amazingly satisfying putting all that together.

  It’s kind of a miracle noah baumbach was able to make a movie about college students using pretentiousness as a coping mechanism for anxiety and insecurity and have it be not aggressively annoying but instead actually lovable!!
